Mediatek officially announced 8-core MT6592 Chipset

Mediatek have officially announce their true 8-core mobile phone chipset today. More details of the 8-core MT6592 here.

While Samsung’s latest 8-core processor still runs on the big.Little framework, the 8-core Mediatek MT6592 will be the first 8-core processor which will actually run all 8 cores simultaneously.

Gizchina News of the week

According to a white paper (download here in Chinese) which Mediatek published today, the benefits of running all 8 cores at once include better energy efficiency, higher performance and up to a 20% increase in 1080p video frame rate.

The Whitepaper goes on to tell the benefits of a true 8-core chipset, however the actual official specifications are still missing! Earlier reports and leaks suggest that the MT6592 will features a mulit-core Mali GPU and will run 8 A7 28nm cores at unto 2ghz. The chipset will support 1080 display, HEVC and VP9 decoding, 13 mega-pixel cameras and will be able to run Android 5.0 OS.

I see bad times for Intel and other computer processor ahead. Already tablets are eating into the computing market, very fast.

Andy when can be see big screen all in one computer or panel pc with this chips, which can run desktop windows os like win 7 etc ?

Can’t wait to see official specs on this chip and which GPU it uses. My best guess a powervr 6 series to be getting 29000 atuntu scores, but which one will they be using? Maybe they are not allowed to disclose it until Apple announce there latest chip in September which will also have powervr 6 series GPU.

still got a long way to go against tegra4 :), nevertheless, it would definitely change how people think of chinese phone given that their 8-core phones have pentaband radio.

Tegra and their 72 core GPU will probably be very very very fast, but it will be very expensive. Unless we’re comparing the Octa core against the Cortex A9 version of Tegra 4, in which case the MTK chip actually stands a chance.

Personally, I’d be astonished if the T4 GPU outperformed the Adreno 330 in the Snapdragon 800.

Bear in mind the “72 core” stuff is just marketing nonsense as GPUs have long been massively parallel and different architectures have differing layouts of ALUs.

Here’s GFXbench scores comparing the T4 in the Toshiba Excite tablet and the Snapdragon 600 in the SGS4:

        http://gfxbench.com/compare.jsp?cols=2&D1=Toshiba+eXcite+AT10PE-A&D2=Samsung+GT-I9505G+Galaxy+S4+Google+Edition

If the S600 can outperform the T4 (albeit possibly on early drivers), there is absolutely no way that it the T4 will be close in performance to the S800.

NVidia have always aimed for ‘mainstream’ GPU performance with their Tegra line and the T4 doesn’t appear to be any different.

I’d doubt the new MT6592 will beat the S800 (or possibly even S600) in the GPU stakes but it will be interesting to see how it fares against the T4.

Interesting. Last I heard, they were going to use the PowerVR SGX544MP4.

Would be very interesting now that they’re moving to the Mali GPU instead. I wonder if we’ll see the same Mali GPU as found in the latest exynos 5420

Interesting find. Kinda sad that it already crushes that much hope I had for T4 (which wasn’t much to begin with)

T3 was a MASSIVE disappointment for me.

I’m kinda hoping that the powervr 6 series will outperform adreno 330. This article http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/graphics/display/20120111164604_Imagination_Unveils_PowerVR_Rogue_Architecture_with_DirectX_11_1_Functionality_for_Consoles_Smartphones_Tablets.html
states a big jump in graphics performance over 5 series up to 20x and 5x more power efficient. And the first batch will be nerfed like the first 5 series like sgx520 meaning in a few years 6 series will surpass ps3/xbox360 graphics. Imagine playing ps3/360 ports on your phone like playing GTA 3 now.

    8 cores@ 1.2GHz look very very good compared to 4 core @ 2GHz
    I want that in a 5″ phone.

    4core @2GHZ in a 13″ tablet and 15000mAh battery! 😀

“the 8-core Mediatek MT6592 will be the first 8-core processor which will actually run all 8 cores simultaneously.”
Nope, it is NOT. Sammy’s Exynos Octo 5420 (and no, I don’t call it “Octa”, since “Octo” as in octopus is the Greek name for the number 8) is going into mass production next month and it supports for the first time for any big.Little CPU, Global task scheduling (GTS for short) also known as big.LITTLE MP.

Mediatek’s MT6592 will only be widely in numbers in November, so clearly, they lost this race!

I think Mediatek deserve credit for getting an 8-core CPU to the market very quickly. I understand that the Cortex-A7 is absolutely tiny at the 28nm process (I think I read it is only 0.5 square mm per core!), so it’s not quite the same engineering feat as the Quad-A15 + Quad-A7 of the Exynos, but it’s still impressive when you consider the MT6592 will targeted at the mainstream market, not the high end.

The article claimed, their “MT6592 will be the first 8-core processor which will actually run all 8 cores simultaneously” and this is not true, since they got beat by Samsung being the first.
That is my whole point I am trying to make.

If you look at the sheer number of China phones running on Mediatek chips and even the big names using their SoCs for many of their entry and low/mid level products, MTK is anything but a dwarf either. Just 2 or 3 years ago they took over Ralink, one of the most widely used manufacturer of USB WiFi radios.
But back on track, I actually haven’t seen any benchmarks yet of the MT6592, nor of the Exynos 5420.
Fact however is, the Exynos is going into mass production in a few days, while the MTK just started the sampling phase, with mass production scheduled for November. So, just to repeat myself, Samsung is months ahead of Mediatek. By the time MTK SoCs become available for manufacturers to start production, phones/tablets with the Exynos 5420 should already be laying in the store shelfs.
