Could Xiaomi be launching the Xiaomi Mi5 on the 15th Jan?

xiaomi mi5 15th launch

Xiaomi will be holding an event in Beijing on the 15th of Jan (8 days from now) leading Mi fans to speculate at what could be at the launch, the top suggestion being the Xiaomi Mi5.

What we know as fact so far is that Xiaomi will be launching something in Beijing at an event on the 15th of this month, what we don’t know for sure is what exactly will be at the launch, but we can have a look at the evidence to guess.

Our first clue came from Hugo Barra at the time he announced that Xiaomi would release the kernel source code for the Xiaomi Mi3, but had to wait until early 2015. The wait is due to the fact that two new phones use the same source and the code would have given the game away! (read more here).

Gizchina News of the week

With that in mind we can assume a Xiaomi Mi3 based phone is at least one of the launch phones for the 15th. Perhaps an updated Mi3 with LTE at a bargain basement price? Perhaps a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 with more powerful hardware? We just don’t know.

However, this doesn’t explain the plentiful Xiaomi Mi5 rumours from spreading. Usually Xiaomi wait until later in the year to launch their flagship phones, but with continued pressure from OnePlus, Huawei, Meizu and even Asus, Xiaomi might feel like pushing a launch forward to keep ahead of the pack.

So if Xiaomi are launching a flagship Mi5 then what can we expect? Well rumours from various sources claim a 5.7-inch 2K display and Snapdragon 810 chipset can be expected. Being a flagship device LTE, 3GB RAM and a 16 mega-pixel rear camera are all part of the (rumoured) package too.

Whatever Xiaomi do have up their sleeves we only have a short time to wait, and likely a good few teasers and leaks to get through before the big day.

What are you hoping for from Xiaomi on the 15th?

Why would a Xiaomi mi3 be at the launch event of 2015 even with LTE its old even if it was cheap that is nothing to get excited about.

It IS something to get excited about, especially if it’s going to keep the same price and get updated specs.

My point was its hardly worth having a keynote for that. And they said a new flagship why would I be excited by a device that is going to get updated that this summer will be 2 years old even if it is cheaper its good news bit so what.

Yesterday afternoon Micron said in their results call that “Xiaomi is differentiating with large memory configurations”.
Since Xiaomi doesn’t have anything with lots of RAM or NAND we can assume that this new device will likely have 4GB or RAM. Lots of NAND or both is also possible.

And they also should have a 55 inch TV.

The rumors are saying also that this phone could more than 2000 yuan in China, could be similar pricing as the Meizu MX4 PRO in China.

But it feels like the Mi4 has only been out 5 minutes!

They relly are the Chinese Apple aren’t they! Releasing a new ‘replacement’ phone stupidly fast!

      Apple doesn’t do that.

        January 7, 2015

No, maybe not now, but they used to…

I’m referring to the business model where they released an iPhone, then rather quickly released the same model with an ‘s’ in the name which is basically the same phone but actually works! All this while quite quickly cutting update support for phones that were not so long ago stupid money to purchase which have then since been replaced 2 or 3 times…

-Absolute Shite value for money in the respect of future proofing…

But hasn’t the Mi4 been working just fine? And Xiaomi does update most of their older phones even now.

All I’m saying is from my observations, the Mi4 hasn’t been out long and from what I gather, Xiaomi are slow to update… (Lollipop based MiUi out yet?)

              January 7, 2015

It doesn’t really matter if MiUi is based on Lollipop since MIUI, does it? They’ve always treated MIUI as it’s own thing, with major updates being MIUI updates like from V5 to V6. Having it be based on Lollipop would change literally nothing.

Xiaomi doesn’t release enough models to be compared with Samsung.

I think they should concentrate on update the OS of their existing phone rather than releasing new ones.M4,Note and the m1s all this are less than a year.
They are now acting like Samsung that release new phone every month .If they are China Apple they should emulate Apple that release phone yearly.

    • Airyl
      January 7, 2015

They update MIUI every Friday. And why would they try to emulate Apple when it’s clear they want to avoid doing that?

      • ade oju
        January 7, 2015

The update are minor update ,major one like KK and lolipop. Note mtk model still stock on 4.2.2 .
There’s no doubt that Xiaomi made good phones but, they should make everyone happy by given less a year phone most recent OS update . Not to make six month phone outdated

The Mi2 and Mi2s got updated to MIUI V6 based on KitKat in September. I’d say they’re still updating their phones just fine.

I heard the rear facing camera, maybe 20.7 mp.

I hope they release kernel sources to allow for 3rd party custom rom development.

Maybe by releasing the beastly Mi5, they want to show what they are really capable of to the other manufacturers and be on par for what will be released later on in 2015 like Sony Xperia Z4, LG G4 etc…

Xiaomi won’t publicly announce it, but they know they really f’ed up with the Mi4 hence why they’re so quick to release the Mi5. Notice how they’re not bragging about how many Mi4’s they’ve sold? It’s because sales haven’t been that great, especially when compared to the Mi3. Xiaomi is starting to be more well known for their ultra cheap Redmi phones more so than their flagship and they most likely want to reverse this trend as they’re out to build a brand above everything else.

    • Bailey
      January 8, 2015

And you know that how? Facts and figures please. I love the fact that people are calling Xiaomi stupid because they are going to release a New product and they don’t even know what it is yet.

      • Angry Mobile Nerd
        January 8, 2015

I would love it if Xiaomi would please release the sales figures, unfortuately they have reason not to.

My comment is based on observation. No, not internet-based observation, but get-your-hands-dirty-working-and-living-in-China-since-before-Xiaomi-even-existed observation, and that’s a lot more than most commenters here.

Ask anyone living in China they will agree the Mi3 rocked the market a lot more than the Mi4. However, the Redmi and Note have been doing extremely well. Out of all the Xiaomi phones I see outside I see the Mi4 the least.

        • Bailey
          January 8, 2015

So basically based on no solid information at all. Just because you live in China and made a general observation some how you can say that the Mi3 sold more than Mi4 um this is with a population of 1.357 billion

          • Angry Mobile Nerd
            January 8, 2015

Yup. and you’re not even in China so you don’t have a clue. Observation is actually quite useful, you know. You can learn a lot just from observing, try it some time.

I wish Xiaomi would release sales figures, and even more importantly, profit figures. Xiaomi isn’t a public company yet so all we can do is speculate. And BTW, the internet is full of speculation and opinions, if you’re online expecting everything to be 100% facts with 100% hard data to back them up then you probably shouldn’t be on the internet.

You wouldn’t happen to be a Mi4 owner by any chance, would you?

            • Bailey
              January 9, 2015

You know we don’t always have to agree that’s fine but when people become rude that’s what makes the comment section not very nice. Did I swear when I replied to you’re comments no. What I was trying to say is for example Apple have major sales of their iPhones in New York their is data for that. And no I don’t live in New York based on a population of over a billion people you can say that the mi4 sold less than the mi3 yes I get you live in China but what is it based on. I don’t mind if it did I was just asking that question where’s the evidence if its just based on the fact that you have seen more people walking with an mi3 more than an mi4 in a country with such a large population it does not mean much. Also you stated that Xiaomi is fed with mi4 hence the reason for the new handset how do you know what they feel about it do you work for them. Please feel free to swear at me again Lol

              January 9, 2015

Uhh my information might be outdated but I still believe the Mi4 is only officially available for sale in China still, right? (maybe no?) If that’s still the case, obviously you aren’t going to see many (if any) outside of China. Xiaomi’s largest market share is in China so actually making observations in China would give you the best chance at a positive result, wouldn’t it?

Someone in Bangkok saying they haven’t seen any Mi4’s hence sales must be bad would be just stupid because it’s not available there, but I’m China, the only country where it’s being officially sold and I see a lot of Mi3’s and iPhone 4/5/6’s and tons of Samsungs but Mi4’s? Very very few. Actually I still see more Mi2’s on the street than Mi4’s. It’s just not getting picked up. Actually it seems the international community seems more interested in the Mi4 than the Chinese community, too bad they can’t buy one.

Like I said in my original reply, ask anyone else living in China, I’m sure they’ll agree with me. It never reached the same hype as the Mi3. My opinion is Xiaomi knows they f’ed up with the Mi4 because they “borrowed” design elements from the iPhone 5 only for Apple to launch a whole new redesigned iPhone 6 hence rendering the iPhone 5’s design as outdated (hence rendering the Mi4’s design as outdated). Meizu got it right borrowing design elements from the iPhone 6 before it was launched, now Xiaomi is rushing to play catch-up.

You almost don’t seem excited about the news of a possible new Xiaomi flagship launch which is why I asked if you are a Mi4 owner. Only a Mi4 owner would be upset and feeling burned if Xiaomi launches a new flagship on the 15th.

              January 9, 2015

Hate to say this to you but the mi3 is a borrowed design from a small company called Nokia. I can’t wait to see what Xiaomi will bring next. I am a mi4 owner but I couldn’t care which handset sold more my point was simply you can’t say which handset sold more because you have no info if the mi3 sold more great what difference does it make to me as an mi4 owner I still get regular updates and Xiaomi are a great company some how you are thinking I have sour grapes because of this. If I wanted a mi3 I could of bought one I didn’t because I didnt like the build. Please stop assuming how i feel you don’t know. If I offended you I am sorry I just hate sweeping generalisation. By the way I usually change my handset every few months I buy and sell phones from china
