LeTV Le1S unboxing and hands on

Unboxing, hands on and first impressions of the all new LeTV Le1S Android smartphone. Keep reading for the unboxing video and my first impressions.

Over this past year I have test some great phones and one of the best came from LeTV. In my possession I have the LeTV Le 1 (read the review here) and the LeTV Le Max, but it was the Le 1 which really knocked my socks off and rewrote the rule book for affordable smartphones.

A few weeks ago, LeTV announced the all new LeTV Le1S a phone which builds on what’s great about the original Le 1 but adds a new high-end build and updated features to the phone while costing less.

From the front the LeTV Le 1S looks almost identical to the Le 1 with a 5.5-inch display and a design that looks like the phone has no bezels. The rest of the design is much improved though as is build. The Le 1S features a unibody all alloy body, and a rounder profile for a slightly more comfortable feel.

let le1s review

The all new metal body also has a new location for the 13 mega-pixel F2.0 rear camera and comes with the addition of a fingerprint scanner. The sensor on the fingerprint scanner has a mirror finish, so its possible that it will double up as a mirror so you can use the main camera for selfies too.

Under the hood the LeTV Le 1S is pretty similar to the original Le 1 but with a more powerful 2.2Ghz Helio X10 chipset. The rest includes 3GB RAM, 3000mAh battery, 5.5-inch display and LeTV’s EUI ROM based on Android 5.0.2.

Hi Andi, does this come with the ability to lock apps? because the Letv Le1 does not have that function. I want to be able to lock my emails, photos and my messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook messenger so that no one else can read my messages if they ask to use my phone for any reason. I have the Le1 which I bought from gizchinashop. If the answer is yes then I will order this one immediately from gizchinashop and use it as my daily driver which at this moment is my Find7…..thanks

    • November 11, 2015

Hi, so far I didn’t see this feature, but I’ll take another good look and be sure.

      • Bility
        November 11, 2015

I hope u find something because without these functions it will be big let down for me in terms security features. I really hope it’s there because it’s not on the Le1

why don’t you just install a third party app?

it doesn’t matter if it’s a system app like the one in oppo roms or a downloaded one.
          they work exactly the same.

look for “guest mode” on Google Play store.

Thanks Max, I don’t want to download something that will bring a lot junks with it. Which one will u recommend best?

I am so used to the one on colorOS, I just can’t live without it on any phone

              November 11, 2015

i don’t need that feature so i haven’t tried any of those apps.
              sorry.

it has to be one that works good for you, even if you have to pay a couple of dollars.

what are you asking is an system apk installed on ColorOs roms, so the other option is that someone start porting this rom for Letv phones (improbable)
or if you extract the apk and install it on letv phones (very risky)

that’s why i suggested you to go for a third party app, which is in my opinion the easiest way.

I have these features on my other phones….Oukitel U8 and Mi4i, I don’t why Letv is not in incorporating these features in their phones.

    Hello Andi,
Could you check, please, the sensors instaled on this phone? I’ve seen some antutu tests and it seems it lacks a few, like g-sensor, gyro, linear acceleration, rotation vector. This sensors are not mentioned on their product page, too.

Gorgeous looking phone tbh. If I hadn’t ordered the Honor 7 today this one would’ve been on top of my list next to the OnePlus X.

MI4C advanced version or Letv 1S? I am planning to buy the advanced version of the MI4C at 255€ shipping costs included. It is going to be my first smartphone and I was wondering if you could help me to decide which phone to get. I know that the community is quite huge for Xiaomi devices, do you believe that I am going to be in trouble if I go for the Letv 1S? I am french but using the phone in English is not a problem for me. Letv 1S has an amazing build quality and great hardware pretty similar to the advanced version of the MI4C (of course slightly bigger) but at an attractive price. Thanks!

      • Tajwar
        November 11, 2015

The mi4c is more powerful, it’s camera is great and the community as you know.

But if you don’t need da powa, ok with big screen and like the build quality… Well then go ahead (ok maybe just wait till Andis review is out).

          November 11, 2015

Thank you for your reply! It helps a lot! I really don’t know what to chose, both phones have pros and cons. Letv is brand new as a phone maker even if the company is well known in China. An user pointed the fact that I will be able to install custom ROMs if I go for the MI4C (he also said that MI4C is more powerful). I will think about it then I will decide. Peace!

      November 12, 2015

It does have the one I need in my country. But I’m scared that I might get it without Google Play or if the resellers wipe the original ROM for whatever reason, and send me a NON upgradeable ROM that won’t benefit from updates form LeTV . any help? Any ideas?

      • MaxPower
        November 12, 2015

i never leave the ROM the phone comes with (for obvious security reasons).

Anytime i buy a new phone from china i download the firmware from the official channel,i flash it and then i install the Gapps.

    November 11, 2015

Damn this phone is amazing, I am about to order the MI4C from Xiaomi and I am really lost. I believe that the community when buying a Xiaomi phone is an asset, what about Letv? It wouldn’t be an issue for me to use the phone in english language. I mean when it comes to resolve problems, are Letv developers serious in helping phone owners? I could get the MI4C with 3gb ram around 250€ with shipping costs but this Letv 1S with its build quality and hardware is unbeatable. Hi Andi, what to you think about the weight of the Letv 1S? Thanks.

    • Rick Van de Bovenkamp
      November 11, 2015

The hardware of the LeTv 1S doesn’t beat the Mi4C and Xiaomi is better if you want custom roms etc. Though the main choice for you would be size as Mi4C has a 5″ screen and LeTv a 5.5″ screen. Both are the best choices in their respective sizes I believe, so you’re good to go with eighter of the phones!

      November 12, 2015

Maybe you are :). This new 1s looks really good imo and I’m not sure how anyone can prefer glossy plastic over aluminium? I do prefer the grey version over this gold one though.

I’m just not a fan of the Chinese stuff on this phone. Would be nice to see CM for this, that would make it almost perfect.

      • Tajwar
        November 12, 2015

Ironically it’s the plastic that makes the phone gripper and my mother doesn’t mind it(she owns a x600)

    LeTV 1S or Meizu MX5?
They are similar (both even have fast charging).
Only difference: Meizu has AMOLED screen and LeTV has LCD.

    • MaxPower
      November 11, 2015

personally i would pick this one because it’s much cheaper and it has 32gb rom.

      • tauerman
        November 12, 2015

Ok, so Meizu Metal would be at a comparable price

        • MaxPower
          November 12, 2015

yes, the 1S and the Metal belong to the same league.
Then it’s up to personal taste.

          • tauerman
            November 12, 2015

@disqus_0IJZ8Bi7SK: Ok, LeTV 1S costs me 255€ with import VAT, Meizu Metal 16GB also 255€ and 32GB version is 288€.
But Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Prime is only 195€

For the price/value ratio I would get the Redmi, but I read that the battery runtime is bad.

            What do you think?

            • MaxPower
              November 12, 2015

in my opinion the Letv is just a step higher than the Redmi due to metal finish, better audio quality and fingerprint scanner.

if you don’t mind the plastic of the Redmi then you have a better community support and SD card slot (highly demanded here on Gizchina)

              did you say battery?
The Redmi is the only one with a removable battery.

Seriously, all you have to do is buy a spare battery ($10), keep it charged and when your phone is running out of juice all you have to do is these 6 steps:

              1:turn the phone off
              2:remove the lid
              3:remove the battery
              4:insert new battery
              5: replace the lid
              6: turn the phone on

total of 3 minutes of your time.
there’s no quick charge technology or battery saver app that can beat it.

            • Joel Adames
              November 12, 2015

that’s THE REAL SUPER-FAST-CHARGE!!! IN DEED.

I quite like the Meizu Metal.
But after browsing and letting the official forums translate. I found out, that the Meizu Metal right now only runs on YunOS which you can’t root 🙁
So either I pay more and get the MX5, or wait for the review of the LeTV from Andi.
Hopefully they will soon release the silver version, because I don’t like the copper look of the the golden version.

          as you can see here

as far as taxes and other stuff goes , im still working that out. Tell you what , you also ask around general forums in Pakistan and i will too. whoever gets solid info , informs the other.

settings->app management->default apps (left side down under)->launcher and then select which one you want. i use apex, it is very smooth with the X600

    Hello Andi,
Could you check, please, the sensors instaled on this
phone? I’ve seen some antutu tests and it seems it lacks a few, like
g-sensor, gyro, linear acceleration, rotation vector. This sensors are
not mentioned on their product page, too.

how good is the battery in your opinion?
    Thanks

    • Klaus
      November 15, 2015

Well I can tell you when I’ve had the phone now for 3 days that the battery is not good at the moment. Even though the rom “should be stable” it’s clearly not. Last night my battery drained from 50% to 0 during the night. Haven’t yet sorted out what’s cousing the drainage, but is seems it’s the OS itself and then the “remote app” for controlling you TV etc. which is not able to be disabled. Hope they will sort things out soon. When I got the phone there was an update available which I installed, this version of the os may have coused the problems.

        November 16, 2015

Drained just 3% last night when I had on “battery saving mode”.

So where’s all the tears over the large screen bezel… oh wait it’s not an Elephone. This LeTV has huge bezels.

    • November 12, 2015

I think what people mind is Elephone teasing ‘the world’s first bezel-less phone’ and then releasing a phone that has… well, bezels.

so nice. hope you guys get a bluboo Xtouch soon other than this would be my first choice, but no micro-sd is a big deal as i carry a lot of games and work stuff to places with out network connection (read: no cloud options) and the bluboo does have support for micro-sd cards.

After reading review after review after review of different phones in the LeTV Le1(S) Price range the last few months i came to the conclusion that, probably, this phone gives the best bang for the buck. I have bought phones from China before (HDC, Huawei, Meizu and Xiaomi) and i paid roughly 180 euros for one Le1S (bought me two tho, for me and my wife). Here in NL these phones would easily reach retail prices around 350-400 euros… If i would spend 180 euro’s here in NL on a phone i wouldnt be able to buy me a phone that would get even close to the Le1S features. Also i never had ANY problems with any Chinese Phone i ever bought… So… I think its a good deal 🙂

        November 12, 2015

you should look at Giztop.com no extra shipping fee and from what I heard they have a somewhat different shipping partner which from what I hear once the phone reaches your country it will be delivered by a delivery company rather by reaching your postal office, in my country it is delivered by DPD

I was just looking at them yesterday, it’s 195€ and is more trusted then some of the vendors I’ve sen, with shipping pretty quick. Interested to see how much bloatware will be on their device, don’t really want to flash a device, I’m a noob and have nver done it.

I bought two Letv Le1s and also one Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 with a skin case from from Oppomart dot com. The Letv Le1s costs $199 and de Redmi Note 2 cost me $149. I have bought from them before and i had no problems with them yet. Together with EU Expedited Shipping the order was about $570. And i gotta say that is a good deal (correct me if im wrong tho 🙂 )

        • Olympique_Packers
          November 13, 2015

It is a good deal, 180€ is the cheapest I’ve seen it go… Does it have playstore and multilanguage rom on there? How much bloatware?

          • Excorio
            November 13, 2015

Playstore is on it. Languages are English, French, Spanish, Russian, German, Italian and Portuguese. Ofcourse there are a few apps on there (Every Phone has some nasty bloatware apps on it) that will only support the Chinese language but i suggest you freeze em (with LinkSD for example) so they dont clog up ur screen, thats what i always do :). There is some info around on how to remove bloatware of Letv’s but im not a fan of that cuz of maybe failing future updates…

Well… I received my X500 a few days ago and I’m blown away by it. Antutu shows results between 46552 and 51242(!), depends on what’s running also cuz it ain’t rooted and lots of preinstalled stuff clogs up the internals. With a fairly clean phone (tried to clean the memory, apps/services/etc., as good as possible) it runs over 51000. Multicore on Geekbench is 5288 (this is the test result of my phone posted about an hour ago http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/4346232 ) Also the build quality is very good indeed, the aluminium body looks the bee’s knees, it ain’t exactly gold tho, its more rosé gold kinda look. Mine has all the settings, languages (original rom only has English and Chinese, so I don’t have a stock ROM, I’m Dutch) and goodies on it u could wish for. Fingerprint is really fast also, there is no NFC.The screen is also very good imho. Sadly enough I can’t seem to find a way to shut down haptic while typing and thats annoying…

It has a notification led :). Camera suits me well, nice clear sharp photos, i dont use the cam much tho, not much of a photographer. Battery holds out longer than I thought it would, don’t have the numbers on it but I played around with it all day today and still, while typing, it has juice enough…

I could go on and on but to tell you the truth… I aint seen this kind of value for money in a LONG time…

Now I only need to root it so i can freeze some annoying preinstalled apps.. 🙂 like I mentioned I don’t have the stock ROM but I will try this one out next week, needs a visit to the Chinese letv forum tho, thank god for Google translate…

I also found other resellers saying that they could install other languages than english/chinese on this… I just wonder how they could just add another languages on android ? and if it could be problematic for further updates ?

            • Klaus
              November 15, 2015

There is a small “LED dot” on the upper part of the phone on the left side. It can be red, yellow or green. It will blink if you e.g. get a message. It will blink red when battery is low, and while you are charging it’s first red, then yellow and when done it’s green.

              November 15, 2015

Camera bad/mediocer and lets not talk about the battery.. So I’m afraid that you are correct. The current firmware have some serious problems. There was an update available when I started the the phone for the first time so I updated. This update may be the problem, or the update was a bad try to fix the problem. (hard to say when the details regarding the update is in Chinese on the phone). Either way I hope there will be a fix as soon as possible.

Andi, please check the GPS on your review, because I remember in the review of the previous LeTV you mentioned some GPS problems. I wonder if they’ve fixed them.

I’d actually appreciate special attention to GPS functionality in all phone reviews, as I my phone is one with an old Media Tec chipset (Umi C1) and although I like it a lot, I can’t really use it for navigation….
