UMi Touch will feature Android 6.0 and Sony IMX328 rear camera

umi touch

UMi are still rolling out details for their user defined Android phone known as the UMi Touch confirming which camera and OS it will come with.

The latest UMi Touch news is that the new phone will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow meaning no wait for an update (at least this is how the press release reads) and the phone will use a Sony IMX328 rear sensor.

The IMX328 has shown up on a lot of UMi’s phones recently, but actual details of the sensor are hard to come by. All we know from UMi is that it is a 13 mega-pixel camera. Even searching the Sony spec pages doesn’t show the sensor.

Gizchina News of the week

On to the build. From what we read, UMi are really going to town with the build quality of the UMi Touch paying special attention to detail and machining of the alloy body. As already mentioned in previous articles the curve of the Touch is similar to the iPhone 6S for better comfort and the edge near the screen will feature a 45 degree Diamond Cut finish similar to the detail on Meizu phones and the OnePlus X.

For those of you wanting to get your hands on the UMi Touch, UMi are offering a pre-sale on the 18th Feb, but registering early could earn you a $70 saving, see the UMidigi website for more details.

      lol … ikr !
sad to see Gizchina digressing away from their usual and entertaining (even if somewhat depressing for those of a faint heart) critic approach for a more marketing one !

      • January 30, 2016

It’s a Sony IMX328, the link to the Sony site is to show you there is no such camera… make your on conclusions

It’s a surveillance camera sensor… Sure they’ll have a good night performance, but it’s hard to imagine something like that into a smartphone lol

Just a slow news day, as was yesterday and the following days because of the CNY. More reviews on the way though.

lol … u seem to have more time on hand than usual :p
when does the CNY festival finish and the news section starts getting flooded ?

        • January 30, 2016

From now to the mid of Feb will be quiet on the news front, but we will have a ton of time for reviews so watch out for that. After CNY it’s going to be insane. A ton of new phones and MWC!!

Hi Andy, I saw GizChina.it have done a review for the Redmi Note 3 Snapdragon 650 version. Any chance that you will manage to get one soon? Cheers!

        • MattD
          January 30, 2016

Not much of a review, it’s mostly a “it’s good, better than redmi note 3″… Maybe they’ll make a deeper review of the 3/32 version (which is on the way)

            January 30, 2016

I see. I am more concerned about camera performance since it has the new Samsung sensor. Plus how the SD650 performs overall as compared to the X10. Should be better obviously but you never know what negatives it might have.

              January 30, 2016

The new sensor shouldn’t matter, Samsung makes some excellent sensors and Xiaomi does a great job of optimizing their components and their software.

Any chance you got a MT6755m based device like the Lenovo k5 Note? Pretty sure the GPU is clocked lower than in the MT6755 but can’t find info.

      January 30, 2016

Doesn’t really look like it. Gizchina’s reporting what umi said in its advertisement, so there’s no other way to say that. In the meantime, however, they’re doing their homework reporting the non-existence of that sensor, so we readers will know something’s fishy here… I see nothing bad here!
What did you expected? To report this type of news (wich are advertisement right from the start) but then adding “but that’s not true! BS!” at the end of every sentence?

328 but still a ghost. 238 is a 1.37MP chip for infrared CCTV I think

I hope no one will buy this… Usually i cheer for umi because i like their designs… This time it’s a damn clone, plus they fooled all of us with that apollo project! First they asked people what’s their tastes, then they ignored everything and decided specs on their own, still pulling around that “user defined” BS! It really upset me… So again: i hope no one will buy this, so they learn how to behave in the future

      January 30, 2016

there actually was the possibility to choose among two specs for each category, I also voted for it so I remeber and can confirm you this… and those were the specs which were most voted back when the survey was still running, so I think it’s more to blame on users this time. Some alternatives were qualcomm quadcore, 5″ or (5.2″) display an 3+32 non expandible memory, but seems people always want the same thing over and over…

At least we’ll have fingerprint sensors that can work under thick enough glass soon, maybe then we stop seeing these stupid buttons.

    • balcobomber25
      January 30, 2016

I love the buttons if they serve a purpose like on Meizu phones.

      • realjjj
        January 30, 2016

Besides being ugly, ruining the looks and making the device look like a Samsung clone, it also leads to a large bezel. Focusing the actionable area in a small spot slows the user (in both 1 handed and 2 handed usage) – except the cases when multiple consecutive presses are needed – and makes it easier to drop the phone in 1 handed usage. Some extreme users also managed to deform their pinky finger because of the way they hold their phones and home buttons with large bezels are making it worse.
Home buttons are stupid no matter what some users might thing just because they are used to it and the bigger the phone the worse it is.

        • balcobomber25
          January 30, 2016

I don’t care about bezel size so we disagree there. And personally I think bezeless designs are even uglier.

I am not slowed in any way by having a home button and have no issues with dropping it (related to a home button). Also I have never heard of a single person deforming their fingers from using a home button, do you have links to back this up showing that was the cause?

          • realjjj
            January 31, 2016

Bezel size is a factor in all 4 criteria , it’s not a personal choice.
It’s not about any single person but everybody is slowed down even if the person isn’t aware of it and i never said home buttons cause deformed fingers, what i said was that big bezels and home buttons make it worse – it’s a matter of mechanics. People getting that, hold the pinky finger under the phone and do so way too much. But that’s rare and i just used it to illustrate how little ergonomics are a factor when designing a phone and how far it can go.
Folks like Apple or Samsung got stuck with the home button and they are afraid to take the risk of a change. In Apple’s case it was sustainable on small phones but not anymore and not sure they know it, they lost their compass long before going bigger.. Everybody else is just being silly. They are also using huge bezels to increase the volume of the device and be able to fit the battery while keeping it thin. The size of the battery is about equal to the size of the upper and lower bezels in an in iphone- if they had no bezels, they wouldn’t have room for a battery but that’s offtopic.

Would you name an actual phone that meets your liking, except the Sharp Aquos…. ?

            • realjjj
              February 1, 2016

it’s not about a personal preference or liking something. The Sharp devices have a large lower bezel , not at all ideal.
The point of evolution is to get where we aren’t yet, it would be irrational to aim for something that already exists.
The conversation wasn’t really about bezels but that was somewhat part of it too. Pretty much any user wants a big screen and a small body. The smaller the bezel ,the closer you get to that.
Take the LG G3 with 5.5 inch screen at 146.3 x 74.6 vs the 12% larger area of the iphone 6s plus at 158.2 x 77.9. A huge difference both in the hand and in the pocket. Why in the hell would anyone want the bulkier one?

              Personal preference?

            • balcobomber25
              January 31, 2016

Bezel size is a complete personal choice. You don’t like bezels, I do. But of course you will write a long detailed post explaining to everyone that no one has opinions on bezels, everyone sees things exactly as you do.

And some people like scat porn, means little. Bezels are a negative both in the hand and in the pocket no matter how you look at them based on reason not your personal preference. personal preferences have no relevance.

What other Umi phones has the IMX328 shown up in? None that I can see.
Is this the same source that said the Umi Rome (IMX164) had the same camera as the Umi Zero (IMX214)?

    • Ken Stagwaff
      February 1, 2016

Umi Rome was touted as imx 179 . Don’t know which it is , don’t really care , I just know Umi can’t be trusted with specs.
I have an emax which is generally quite good in reality but they lied about aluminium body , 4g band 20 , lollipop update, camera , battery to name ‘just’ a few . From what I can tell , the strategy is : lie to make sales , don’t bother with customer service, get some (ahem ) tame ‘reviewers’ onside for pre-sell , disappoint those customers , ignore the criticism, give the finger to those aforementioned customers and move on to the next lot of unsuspecting buyers. Bit more substantial than fretting over bezel size – jeez , first world problems !
