Oppo has confirmed both the launch of their upcoming new phone and what camera sensor the new phone will be running too.

Oppo has started to send out invitations to the launch of their Oppo R9S smartphone launch in China and as usual they have done something a little different. With this launch the company has also included a small jewellery box containing a 16 megapixel Sony IMX398 camera sensor confirming what camera the new phone will offer.

Gizchina News of the week

But this isn’t just Oppo buying a sensor from Sony and adding it to the specs! Apparently, the cooperation between Oppo and Sony goes deeper than that with claims that the two companies worked together on the development of the sensor and some key tech for the R9S.

At this stage we don’t know the official specs of the phone but sources close to the company have suggested the phone will feature a Snapdragon 652 SoC, 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory. The main feature will be the Sony 16 mega-pixel sensor which is has a class leading F1.7 aperture and new dual core focus technology. VOOC will also be making a comeback too.

Oppo will be releasing the Oppo R9S on 19th October so watch this space.

Very interesting, may be a new wind for mobile cameras. I wonder what is matrix size?(can’t find it on google).

It seems this information hasn’t been disclosed yet as IMX398 isn’t listed yet on sony-semicon.co.jp

I bet it will be close to IMX378’s specs (Google Pixel / Mi5S sensor)

      • October 10, 2016

It actually is a better sensor, but it all depends on optimization.

Certainly much better than shit full dual sensors. I also like SoC but probably won’t like the pricing.

i think this is talking about dual pixel focus like in the samsung s7 not dual cameras

All seams to be perfect but the SoC is just power efficent. What about gamers who like to make good pictures, too?! ;(

Oppo is one of the best brands when it comes to camera centric phone since 2014. They revealed a groundbreaking focus tech during MWC (said to be a sub-pixel stabilization). Now they’re teaming with Sony on the first IMX398 phone, which means Sony chose to invest in a partnership with Oppo when every smartphone brand on this planet use their sensors.

Chances of failure are below 1% IMHO.

the only thing I m waiting for with Oppo is a smartphone capable of Vooc Super Charge ( charge a 3000mah battery in 15 min). For this I could pay 100$ more as we knows that Oppo phones are costlier than their competitor for same specs

A “new dual core focus technology”.
    Why “dual core” ?

Isn’t it the sub-pixel stabilization technology Oppo displayed at MWC Barcelona earlier this year ?

Oppo makes great Hi Fi and top notch blue ray players. I also have Oppo Find 5 and 7. Both great looking phones. Also have One+ and ZTE Nubia Z11 Max. The Z11 Max takes great vibrant photos.
