Google Keyboard is now Gboard (and smarter)

There have been tonnes of keyboard apps that have come and gone on the Android scene. I’ve tried many, if not most, myself, but invariably, it has been the Google Keyboard that I liked best.

Fast forward, and the best keyboard on Google Play just got a makeover. Well, not a makeover per se, but definitely a bit of a change. For one, it’s now called Gboard.

Other changes are in the functionality. The most important and noticeable bit is that the keyboard now features Google search right within itself. What this means is that if your know-it-all friend types a word you’ve never heard of before, you can simply perform a Google search right from your IM app… without ever having to leave the screen. This is of course, only one of the many use cases of the feature.

Another very neat feature is the ability to swipe across the spacebar icon to move the cursor in the text area.

The rollout of the app is taking place at the Play Store, but if you’re impatient (like I was), you can head over to APK Mirror to download the Gboard.apk file and do a sideload.
