Huawei 5G foldable phone in the works, confirms CEO Richard Yu

Foldable phones have been around for years, but it seems the coming year could open a new chapter for smartphones with a flexible display. While Samsung is reportedly upfront about its plans to release a flexible smartphone later in 2019, Apple, LG, Huawei and even ZTE are all weighing in on the option.

While Huawei’s ambition for a commercially available 5G smartphone has been an open secret, the company’s CEO at the sideline of the Huawei Mate 20 pro launch may have linked its 5G ambition with a foldable smartphone. Huawei CEO Richard Yu in a chat with media reps said “We are working on foldable phones,” Foldable 5G phones, he re-echoed.

Further attempts to get a launch timeline as well as the possible specification or size proved abortive, rather he said “Maybe sometime we will launch that, but not this time,” while also dropping the hint that the featured foldable smartphone could be based on the Huawei Mate 20 X.

Whether or not Huawei’s foldable phone ambition will become reality remains unknown, but hopefully, it will, given that Samsung is hard at work preparing one for early 2019 release.
