Chinese tablet maker Cube have been making a song a dance about their all new Cube U9GT5 tablet with 9.7 inch retina display and now it looks to be finally going to go on sale very soon at a very easy to pocket price!

The highlight of the Cube U9GT5 Android tablet it of course the 9.7inch display which boasts a retina display of 2048 x 1536 and is rumoured to use the exact same display and the current iPad 3!

Gizchina News of the week

Looking past the excellent Retina display the Cube U9GT5 come equipped with the latest Google Mobile OS in the form of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and boasts a similar specification to the Pipo M1 I reviewed a while back which itself has an impressive 1.6Ghz dual-core Rockchips CPU!

There’s also 1GB RAM and options of either 8GB or 16GB on-board memory plus all the usual Android tablet features such as front and rear cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a micro SD card reader!

Cube looks to be getting set to launch the Cube U9GT5 and has announced a starting price of just $220 for this Retina display Android tablet with JB!

    When, where? 🙂

The Pipo you reviewed I believe is the Max M1?

Have you guys seen the Pipo M2? Fantastic device and worth the price tag on it. It’s got sim slot for 3G and doesn’t need an extra modem to be connected to it if you don’t have wireless access.

This Cube is “OK” imho but I would jump on the Pipo M2 considering it’s an upgrade of the M1 which alone in itself is a fantastic piece of device.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but the Pipo M2 does not include a retina display. The whole point of the new Cube model was to compete with the iPad’s 2048 x 1536 display.

I was waiting for the Ramos W30 but this one looks promising.
Do you think the CPU can handle the bigger resolution?

    • October 5, 2012

From what I have seen in my Pipo it should be fine. It’s lightning fast for me, even if the extra resolution slows it down it’s still going to be fast.

Correct me If I’m wrong, but aren’t the tablets easier to get a hold of than the cell phones online from China?

    • October 5, 2012

      I think you’re correct.

    What about apps compatibility ?

I mean the cube is the only android device with such resolution and it’s not a major brand so i doubt developers make their apps 100℅ compatible with these high resolution

Good question! I’d like to know too.

That is a great question. What we do know is that android apps are actually developed for a wide range of screen sizes, so they should adapt quite well to any size/resolution. Based on my limited technical knowledge as a novice developer, I think at the very least the apps will work/look as good as they do on the 1024 x 768 9.7 inch displays. As retina displays become more prevalent in the market, developers will naturally be more keen to include high res packages for larger tablet devices. I guess the point is that the apps out there should work just fine (in theory) even though not all apps are designed to look sexy on a large high res screen (as tablet owners already know, many apps are developed for phones and look quite nasty on 10″ models).

Really good choice this Cube U9GT5. But I think I´ll wait until the new quad-core generation is released. It´s amazing how fast these tablet pcs are improving.
