Not long back, a newbie Chinese maker — OnePlus — announced their first phone, the One, and with it, a few claims. One of these claims mentioned roughly the body dimensions of a 5-inch smartphone but a screen 5.5-inch screen fitted in it. However, as it turns out, the device wasn’t really as compact as portrayed.
Nevertheless, you might still get that, albeit from a different brand. Rumours (and designs, sketches, leaks) are rife about the next LG flagship taking the entire screen : footprint ratio to a whole new level, something the company managed with the G2 as well. The G2 was one of the smallest 5.2″ devices at the time of its release, and the G3 is expected to pull of a similar feat, but with a larger, denser 5.5-inch display.

The smartphone is touted to feature a 538ppi 2560 x 1440 pixel display akin to the OPPO Find 7, which is yet to hit the shelves. What’s more, this giant of a smartphone won’t be much of a giant when we’re talking body dimensions; according to Android Police, the G3 is in fact shorter in length than the HTC One M8.
What this would do is it would sway old school folks like me who’re still keen on having one hand free for other things while using a phone. Of course this is only a rumour (or is it?), but who knows, it could well be one of those rumours which hasn’t suffered much exaggeration before reaching our desks.
Would you give up your 5-inch phone from 2013 for a device like this? Or would you prefer to save yourself some money and get the OnePlus One instead?

I would prefer 5″ in a 4,7″ body like TCL S960, Jiayu S2 Nubia Z5s with a little bit more juice under the hood.
Yet, despite contact campaigning to turn the clock back and return to smaller screens, the market prefers larger ones, and the manufacturers that realize this have thrived (LG, Samsung, and Sony) while the ones that have stubbornly tried to hold back the size (HTC and to a lesser extent Nokia and RIM) have withered.
How long will it take Goophone to clone this one?!! lol
Meizu is working on this as well. Jack Wong said last December his goal for the MX4 was to fit a 5.4 (5.5?) -inch screen into something not much bigger than the current MX3.
Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 are the prototypical 5 inch phones. This phone is quite larger, closer to note size. In fact all new phones are closer to samsung note size than older flagships. Either we have to accept that all phones have turned into phablets, or (that) the term phablet was silly to begin with…
LG is teaching other companies to make beautiful phones.
I’m planning on getting the G3 as my US phone…
Probably will settle for the Nubia X6 as my CN/HK phone because of the dual SIM dual standard LTE support.
But I’m still drooling over the Vivo Xplay 3S. 😉
Well, mobile phones have been around for a few years now, [read decades] and so has acceptance over at least 3 generations. Newer smart phones are now more of a multi media device and the original generation’s eye sight is failing so are now finding small screens a bit of a strain for reading news, magazines, blogs, writing emails etc [possibly the second gen isn’t far behind them!] So, I for one can see the logic in a larger screen whihc gives bigger, better, clearer user experience and packs more info into the area.
