6GB RAM ZUK Z2 Pro launched with F1.8 camera and health sensors

zuk z2 pro launch

Adding to the number of Chinese phone launches this month, Lenovo backed ZUK have just finished wrapping up the launch of the ZUK Z2 Pro, here are the details.

ZUK kicked off last year with the Z1, a phone with Lenovo backing, a big battery, decent storage, USB Type C and CyanogenMod for international users. The Z1 was far from perfect though with some odd styling and buggy OS, so how will the all new ZUK Z2 Pro solve those issues and surpass the previous model?

zuk z2 pro launch

At the start of the ZUK Z2 Pro launch ZUK announced the new phone is going to have a lot of firsts. They claim it is the first phone with support for 23 networks, the first to take photos in a heartbeat, the first true 3D glass body, the first to offer a range of built in health sensors and the first to sync with iCloud. Before the launch I wasn’t too excited, but all those first had me intrigued, so what have ZUK actually launched?

ZUK Z2 Pro launch – Specifications

zuk z2 pro launchRight off the bat the ZUK Z2 Pro has a Snapdragon 820 chipset doing all the grunt work. This is a big deal as last years Z1 used a previous generation Snapdragon 801 chipset. So the 2nd phone from the company and the first to have a current generation chipset.

zuk z2 pro launch

ZUK have opted for the 2.1Ghz version of the SD820 which they say gives the phone the potential to reach 144,939 points on Antutu, and a huge increase in performance over the 801 in the Z1.

zuk z2 pro launch

Compared to the previous phones, one of the big changes for the Z2 Pro is the addition of health sensors for monitoring steps, heart rate, and even UV rays. ZUK say the ZUK Z2 Pro has a total of 10 sensors to accurately track your health activities and automatically know if you are running, walking, riding a bike or even climbing.

zuk z2 pro launch

As for the screen size, ZUK have taken a step back in sizing and made the Z2 Pro 5.2-inch (the Z1 was 5.5-inches), and like many other brands they have opted for a 1920 x 1080 Super AMOLED panel wth 178 degree viewing angles.

zuk z2 pro launch

When ZUK said they have a camera that can take photos in a heartbeat this really got me interested so what are the rear camera specs? Well unlike other phones we have a 13 mega-pixel sensor ISOCELL sensor which is less than the 16 mega-pixel on other phones, but the good news is we had a much larger F1.8 aperture on the Z2 Pro which should really improve low-light photography.

It’s also great to see that the ZUK Z2 Pro has OIS (optical image stabilisation) and PDAF. With all these features we are expecting some great stable images, good low light performance and fast focus speed. In addition the camera app on the Z2 Pro will offer 4K video recording and a ‘Live Photo’ mode.

Gizchina News of the week

The final detail on the front of the phone is the physical home button with built-in fingerprint scanner. ZUK call their version Utouch, and for the Z2 Pro they have updated it with more gesture features. The fingerprint scanner itself has a higher resolution than before and also uses a self-learning feature so the more you use the scanner the more accurate it will become.

Network support will come in a package called Full Netcom 3.0+ which will work with every Chinese network. We’re waiting for the full details of this, but we have high hopes for great international support too.

ZUK Z2 Pro launch – Design

zuk z2 pro launch

Well if you had seen the teaser image then you will already know that the rear of the ZUK Z2 Pro has a laser focus module and dual LED flash on the rear, but the front also has a new narrow border design and retains a physical home button.

zuk z2 pro launch

The good news this time around is the rectangle home button is central to the chin of the phone and both the upper and lower bezels seems very compact compared to rival designs.

zuk z2 pro launch

Both the black and white versions of the ZUK Z2 Pro use what ZUK are calling a ‘true’ 3D glass body which offers a curved rear panel rather than just a glass panel with rounded edges (like a 2.5D panel). This is surely going to feel better in the palm, but will it be as comfortable as Xiaomi’s curved ceramic on the Mi5?

zuk z2 pro launch

The glass rear is attached to a CNC metal frame (gold on the white and grey on the black phones) which has an intergraded ‘Rollcage’design inspired by Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops.

Over to the front. Those narrow bezels on either side of the Z2 Pro have a 0.05mm black border between themselves and the screen, so no ugly black borders like we see on the Xiaomi Mi5, and previous LeTV phones.

ZUK Z2 Pro Pricing

zuk z2 pro launch

ZUK will only be offering a 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 820 model with 128GB memory, but pricing is competitive at only 2699 Yuan which equals around $417.

We’re still waiting to hear about international availability and if the international model will still run CM, so keep posted for updates.

Here in Switzerland i never had any trouble having no band 20, where is this being used a lot. I mean I’m sure there are carriers also offering 4G on other bands

      • balcobomber25
        April 21, 2016

From my experience of traveling in Europe for work and pleasure, band 20 isn’t needed if you live in a major city. Once you get about 10-15 miles outside that city you need it.

        • tauerman
          April 21, 2016

Depends on the carrier, but generally yes.

      • Alexis T
        April 22, 2016

B20 is usefull in big cities as 900Mhz has better concrete penetration than higher rate bands. In Paris, FDD LTE B3/7/20 are used by every operator, so BW is drastically limited inside buildings when you don’t have B20. As an exemple, 4G BW on my work place : Inside = 400kb/s max – Outside = 4Mb/s.

BTW some networks like Parisian sub are only on B20 so… i can’t read news while traveling under the ground w/o B20 ^^

“equals around $417.” This is too much. With resellers and VAT this may be a 600€ device

    • Millet Air Purifier
      April 21, 2016

Pricing is good, the only thing that bothers me is the 5.2″ mini screen. And you can just tell the seller to write value 30$ on it so no VAT

      • tauerman
        April 21, 2016

You can but you still have to pay 19% VAT in Germany

Oh damn, I know germany has a really strict customs, Lucky for me in Switzerland customs believe everything thats written on the package.

In Germany you get a letter from Deutsche Post if there is no “Rechnung” on the outside of the package. Then you go to the next customs office an have to open the package and bring the “Rechnung”. Then pay the VAT.

LOL mini screen, you need at least a 32 inch TV, buy a tablet

        • balcobomber25
          April 21, 2016

Compared to the first one which was 5.5 inches, this is a mini screen.

          • Danny
            April 21, 2016

            LOL then a 4.5 is a nanoscreen, i wonder what a 5′ one is… C’mon

            • balcobomber25
              April 21, 2016

All depends on the brand and the user. Since Zuk doesn’t make a 4.5 it’s pointless to talk about one and this would be their mini. ZTE Nubia uses the name Mini on 5 inch phones. For some here anything below 6 is mini.

            • Danny
              April 22, 2016

How does size depend on brand and user?! I think you still have some effects from 4:20 LOL a size is a unit of measurement. Science!

By that logic the A320 is a mini Airplane because the A380 is bigger ROTFL

            • balcobomber25
              April 22, 2016

How does size depend on Brand? Not every brand has every size phone. I know that’s hard for you to imagine but each brand has a different meaning for the word “mini”. And just so you are aware the word “mini” is not a unit of measurement. Coming from someone who uses “4:20” it explains everything. For Apple a “mini” phone is 3.5 inches. For Nubia it is 5 inches.

How does a user determine size? For you a mini phone is 4.5 inches. For many here it is anything under 5.5 inches.

The fact that you have no clue what logic is, is the funniest thing of all. ROTFL!!!

            • Danny
              April 22, 2016

“5.2” mini screen” Honestly I think you may have a learning problem. There is no mention of brand by the OP.

Size in your universe is relative to phone brands, it must be a hard universe to live in LOL. 5.2 inch is 5.2 inch !!!!!!!!!!!!!

            • balcobomber25
              April 22, 2016

I think you have a comprehension problem. Th OP mentioned size. He is a USER. Go back to my original comment which you are struggling mightily to understand. Brand and USER. Now which one did we just learn the OP is?

This is a dedicated phone/tablet site right? Gee I wonder why I am only talking about phone brands… I know you’re smart enough to figure that one out, then again maybe not.

Size is relative to whatever you are talking about. There are mini cars (actual class not the brand), mini computers, mini phones, mini apartments and homes. But on this site just for reference we talk about phones, you commented on an article about a phone.

            • Danny
              April 22, 2016

OMG, I’m talking apples your talking oranges! An inch is a unit of length, it is not relative!!!

One inch IS one inch, it doesn’t matter if you are measuring phones or any other kind of object, at least on planet Earth, perhaps you are from another planet?!

An inch (plural: inches; abbreviation or symbol: in or ″ – a double prime) is a UNIT OF LENGHT in the imperial and United States customary systems of measurement.

              a) Zuk does not brand this as a Mini.
              b) 5.2′ is not small, and the OP was saying its a mini screen.
              c) I was sarcastically pointing that out that he needs a 32′ screen.

              Do you get it now?!

            • balcobomber25
              April 22, 2016

              A. Zuk brands this as a 5.2 inch phone. There previous phone was 5.5 inches.
              B. To MICHAEL 5.2 is SMALL. HE likes phones over 6 inches. To YOU it is not small.
              C. A 32 inch TV is small.

Do you get it now? Every phone user has a different idea of what a 5.2 inch display is. For me it is average/small.

            • Alexis T
              April 22, 2016

              Danny,

“Size in your universe is relative to phone brands, it must be a hard universe to live in LOL. 5.2 inch is 5.2 inch !!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Size isn’t relative to brand, wording is. ‘Mini’ isn’t a size, it’s a purely marketing wording determined by a line of products.

              If a brand sell 3 phones : 6″, 5.5″ and 5.2″ then they’ll call ‘Max/Pro’ the 6″ phone, 5,5″ should be ‘normal’ and 5.2″ will be ‘mini’.

If another brand sell 2 phones : 5.2″ and 4.5″ then they’ll call ‘normal’ the 5.2″ phone and 4.5″ will be ‘mini’

So your conception of what ‘mini’ means is solely defined by your knowing of the phone market, which appears to be a bit ‘light’, IMHO, as nowadays every ‘normal’ flagship has a 5.5″ screen, thus justifying the use of the word ‘mini’ for a 5.2″ screen.

BTW sorry for my approximative english.

            • Danny
              April 22, 2016

Show me the Zuk Z2 Pro mini!!! You can’t just make up shit… 5.2′ is not a small size then the MI5 is a Mini as well?! And many others? What kind of fucked up logic is this? Now size is relative to opinion?

“So your conception of what ‘mini’ means is solely defined by your knowing of the phone market, which appears to be a bit ‘light’, ” LOL, you make me laugh so hard! Ok then I am going to post every phone that is less than 120′ is mini, micro, nano

            • Alexis T
              April 22, 2016

I really don’t get whats so funny here (maybe ’cause im not on ‘4:20’ atm ?). We’re just talking about everyone conception of what is called a ‘mini’ screen, and we found it to be relative :

              – to the idea we have of the state of the market at the time we’re using this concept (ex :Since 2014 most flagships are 5.5″ so a 5.2″ phone may be called ‘mini’)

              – to the user habits (ex : someone who used only 5,5″+ phones may call a 5.2″ phone ‘mini’)

Don’t know how to express this fact any better ^^

It’s kind of deal breaker for me. I need good audio quality in my phone.

        • April 21, 2016

Cool. Doesn’t mean that the audio quality will be crap, but i guess we’ll have to wait for some reviews.

SD820 has a DSP for audio processing, so it may have hi quality audio

    • Alexis T
      April 21, 2016

They probably would have advertised on audio chip, so it seems Z2 audio output relies on SD820 audio lib converter.

Jack 3.5 is on the bottom of Z2, as you can see in the “Z2 first images” article here on gizchina (15th picture from top, white model).

      • Lazar Prodanovic
        April 21, 2016

I think that SoC have integrated dedicated audio procesor along with DSP like S810 had but I can bet you it will be disabled.

    • Alexis T
      April 21, 2016

Nexus 6P and HTC M10 use Sony IMX377 sensor.

This article mention an ISOCELL sensor, which is SAMSUNG property so i don’t think Z2 has the same sensor as 6P/M10.

        April 22, 2016

Even still… I’m super excited to see some results. On the face of it, these specs could add up to a really good camera setup. Let’s hope the software doesn’t let it down. f/1.8 and OIS deserve to make a fantastic camera phone, don’t screw this up ZUK!

      • Alexis T
        April 22, 2016

Yep i tried too. Only thing i found is ZUK CEO talking about a modified Samsung ISOCELL sensor, specific to ZUK Z2.

But i don’t know which sensor has been modified for (or by) ZUK.

      TDD-LTE (bands 38, 39, 40, 41)
      TD-SCDMA (bands 34, 39)

        No band 17?

        • balcobomber25
          April 21, 2016

No but it’s step in the right direction compared to Xiaomi. 2 and 4 should give me great coverage on Tmobile.

          • MaxPower
            April 21, 2016

I’m not sure but I think I might need band 17 for AT&T.

But yes, I agree, Xiaomi is way behind these people.

            • balcobomber25
              April 21, 2016

I am pretty sure Band 4 (1700) is the main band for ATT

            • MaxPower
              April 21, 2016

Oh, I switched the band with the frequency lol.

How funny is that I know all the Chinese LTE bands included the TD-LTE ones and I don’t know the freaking one I’m supposed to use?

            • balcobomber25
              April 21, 2016

Well ATT also used band 17 (700) and band 2 (1900) so check your area to see what is used. But I am almost certain that Band 4 is their dominant band.

  27. njren
    April 21, 2016

Not bad at all. Even North America-ready, with the exceptions of the newer FDD 12 & 17. At his point, though, I think only the Huawei P9 features those two bands…at a Huawei P9 price, of course.

ZUK did a good job crashing the party with this one.

So basically this phone has a heart rate and blood pressure sensor but no NFC ?! Where is the f**** point ?

    • tauerman
      April 21, 2016

Thoses sensors are provided by the 10-sensor Qualcomm 10-sensor-DSP. NFC would have been an additional chip I guess http://www.anandtech.com/show/9552/qualcomm-details-hexagon-680-dsp-in-snapdragon-820-accelerated-imaging

      • JudikJ7
        April 21, 2016

I don’t think so because the support of NFC seems to be built-in the Soc https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/820

        • tauerman
          April 21, 2016

It is supported but still need a separate NFC chip. Like you can see in the Xiaomi Mi5 teardown http://mobile.it168.com/tu/2491417_1.shtml#16 it has a NFC chip NXP 66T17

          • JudikJ7
            April 21, 2016

Okay but I wish that it had NFC so it will be a complete high-end half-priced alternative to the S7, the HTC 10, G5, etc. Even if it means that the phone needs to be a bit thicker.

        • balcobomber25
          April 21, 2016

Last I heard Qualcomm is working to integrate NFC chips into their CPU’s but they aren’t there yet. I believe you still need a separate chip.

A lot of these phones don’t include NFC because it is not widely used in Asia, outside of Apple and Samsung.

          • April 23, 2016

Exactly same for me too. I dont like that they have downgraded the screen size. One thing that has put me off this despite that it ticked every other option.

    • Danny H.
      April 21, 2016

I’m also agree with you balco, my current daily driver is the ZUK Z1 and I have to say I have no complaint so far. This Z2 is really nice in both specs and price, although the battery has been compromised a little for the sake of thinness and there’s still no NFC but with that price, I think all are just minor problems. Now, if it will be officially support by Cyanogen like the Z1 then it would be great!

      • balcobomber25
        April 21, 2016

For me I am good with the battery based on the specs it should be about the same as the Mi5 when it comes to battery life and based on GSM’s comprehensive battery tests the Mi5 (92) is just behind the battery life of the Zuk Z1 (97). Given that MIUI is a bit more resource heavy the Z2 might just match the Z1.

    • Muhammad Yasir
      April 22, 2016

ummm … that EIS/OIS thing has me doing suspicion runs on ZUK. you’re either OIS or you’re OUT !

also , no microsd and no NFC. pretty sure the more drawbacks will come to light in the times to come.

altho , with that said. this is an EXCELLENT effort by ZUK. great improvement !

      • balcobomber25
        April 22, 2016

EIS and OIS are two different types of stabilizing technology. OIS is real time it moves the lens assembly to compensate for any movement. EIS is basically done at the software level after the image is taken. If Zuk is using both of the technologies it could be very good for the end user.

    • balcobomber25
      April 21, 2016

From my experience of traveling in Europe for work and pleasure, band 20 isn’t needed if you live in a major city. Once you get about 10-15 miles outside that city you need it.

    • tauerman

Depends on the carrier, but generally yes.

    • NextHype
      April 22, 2016

B20 is usefull in big cities as 900Mhz has better concrete penetration than higher rate bands. In Paris, FDD LTE B3/7/20 are used by every operator, so BW is drastically limited inside buildings when you don’t have B20. As an exemple, 4G BW on my work place : Inside = 400kb/s max – Outside = 4Mb/s.

BTW some networks like Parisian sub are only on B20 so… i can’t read news while traveling under the ground w/o B20 ^^

        April 22, 2016

Mostly i use NFC for developing some kind of NFC-based application, and the rest is for checking my contactless card balance. My current phone doesn’t have NFC, and i’m looking for smartphone around $300-$400 that does have NFC. Actually there is the alternative called Xiaomi Mi5, but i don’t know if they will be arrived in my country or not because of goverment rules that several percent of the components must be made in this country

Pricing is good, the only thing that bothers me is the 5.2″ mini screen. And you can just tell the seller to write value 30$ on it so no VAT

What reseller? I thought they’re selling internationally like oneplus (so they ship the phone directly to your country)

In Germany you get a letter from Deutsche Post if there is no “Rechnung” on the outside of the package. Then you go to the next customs office an have to open the package and bring the “Rechnung”. Then pay the VAT.

    • balcobomber25
      April 21, 2016

The chances of your phone ever being bent in real life are very very slim unless you actually try to. And most phones can be bent with enough pressure. This guy managed to bend and shatter the S7 Edge:

    • balcobomber25
      April 21, 2016

Compared to the first one which was 5.5 inches, this is a mini screen.

    • Guest
      April 21, 2016

Thats what I thought. If you really want to bend it you will, under normal circumstances – no.

    • balcobomber25
      April 21, 2016

Exactly, the chances of any phone bending under normal usage is slim.

” For you a mini phone is 4.5 inches” Wrong dumb dumb you still don’t get it! Size to me is not relative to a stupid phone screen size

    • balcobomber25
      April 22, 2016

I think you have a comprehension problem. Th OP mentioned size. He is a USER. Go back to my original comment which you are struggling mightily to understand. Brand and USER. Now which one did we just learn the OP is? And the OP was talking about a brand, Zuk which this article is about. To him the 5.2 inch screen is Mini.

The word Mini is an adjective it is used in thousands of products of all different sizes.

    • NextHype

    • NextHype

Big question for me is battery life compared to the Z1 which was excellent. If this Zuk 2 is a ‘Pro’ version, will there be a non-pro one too? Like cars I am usually wary about buying the first model from a brand. There usually is all sorts of issues that get worked out in later models. I would wait for some reviews from the community before deciding.

In the Zuk Z1 the chinese/english ZUI version was better (and had fingerprint gestures) than the Cyanogen version.
So at the moment I would rather import the Chinese version after all

This will work on most European networks thanks to Band 20, and many US Networks thanks to Bands 2 and 4. Battery life should be about the same as the Mi5 which is good.

    • balcobomber25

I have been trying to find out all day, their stated specs doesn’t match any of their existing sensors so maybe it is something new.

    • illystor
      April 22, 2016

Even still… I’m super excited to see some results. On the face of it, these specs could add up to a really good camera setup. Let’s hope the software doesn’t let it down. f/1.8 and OIS deserve to make a fantastic camera phone, don’t screw this up ZUK!

    • NextHype
      April 22, 2016

Yep i tried too. Only thing i found is ZUK CEO talking about a modified Samsung ISOCELL sensor, specific to ZUK Z2.

But i don’t know which sensor has been modified for (or by) ZUK.

From the official page I can see that the device supports FDD-LTE band 20, yeah!!

      FDD-LTE (bands 1, 2, 3,4,5,7,8,20)
      TDD-LTE (bands 38, 39, 40, 41)
      TD-SCDMA (bands 34, 39)

I’m not sure but I think I might need band 17 for AT&T.

  63. Guest

Despite all of that Z2 still have his spot on my wishlist lol

    • balcobomber25
      April 21, 2016

Last I heard Qualcomm is working to integrate NFC chips into their CPU’s but they aren’t there yet. I believe you still need a separate chip.

A lot of these phones don’t include NFC because it is not widely used in Asia, outside of Apple and Samsung.

    • MaxPower
      April 21, 2016

I know and the size was one of the reasons that made steer clear of MI5.
5.5 or even more (5.7-6) would work better for me.

    • balcobomber25
      April 21, 2016

Ideally I want 5.5 but I can settle for 5.2. I am curious about the Xiaomi Max tho

Given that MIUI is a bit more resource heavy the Z2 might just match the Z1.

ummm … that EIS/OIS thing has me doing suspicion runs on ZUK. you’re either OIS or you’re OUT !

also , no microsd and no NFC. pretty sure the more drawbacks will come to light in the times to come.

altho , with that said. this is an EXCELLENT effort by ZUK. great improvement !

The camera might be OK, f1.8 on an Xshot was fine.
The huge concern is – will it be as uncomfortable as the S7 Edge, talk about flawed ‘best phone’ you can buy. This looks like it has a nice front/rear including no sticking out camera BUT a band in the middle making it potentially ‘horrible’ to hold like S7E?
Mi5 (not held yet) seems to be about the only phone to get around this?
No NFC (mobile payments just taking off), and no IR or SD so you will still need a thumb drive.
Why doesn’t someone put ALL the basic things in an ERGONOMIC phone? i.e. mi5+sdhc-bling home button. And make available on Amazon + Int. shipping or something with all bands? Scared Apple will sue still?

Just move on, buy Xiaomi Max, and send your girlfriend to someone with bigger

5.2″ is waaaaaay too small for me. At least 5.7″, so still no alternative to the Huawei Mate 8 with a poor FullHD only 6″ and Camera with 1080p max video capability. Or the LeEco Le Max with an older SD810 plus only a 3200mAh battery in 6.33″ 🙁

It’s still too big for me.

This could definitely have the effect that the original OnePlus had. Great specs, known brand, great price. Shame that price will be more like 550$ after resellers.
