Xiaomi made some bold hardware choices with the Xiaomi Mi5, but it doesn’t appear to have been enough to attract buyers in the number they needed, so an update is on the way. (UPDATE! Full Xiaomi Mi 5S specifications revealed.)
Xiaomi really did make some interesting choices for the Xiaomi Mi5. They made a phone with a new screen size (5.15-inch) just so they could offer more LED’s to give a brighter panel, but retained the much loathed black border design.
The original Mi5, which we saw first hand at MWC, came with a Snapdragon 820 chip, and very fast f1.8 rear camera, but of those of you wanting even better performance you might want to take a look and the purported specs of the Xiaomi Mi5S.

According to these screenshots the new updated version of the Xiaomi flagship will get a chipset upgrade to a Snapdragon 821 running at 2.4Ghz and get up to 6GB of LPDDR4 1866Mhz RAM.
Storage options will reach 256GB meaning that the new phone will be able to handle even more media than the previous.
The rest of the hardware appears unchanged which means the Mi5S will get a 3490mAh battery, USB Type C, 16 mega-pixel F1.8 rear camera and 4 axis OIS.
Xiaomi are expected to release the Xiaomi Mi5S in the coming weeks, so watch out for that and also keep an eye on pricing of the current Mi5 which is set to drop in anticipation for the launch.
What Mi5s must incorporate is a better imaging solution, than it’s predecessor Mi5.
If Mi5s is to be more succesful, perhaps Xiaomi will look at a new class of Image sensors.
Flagship worthy camera similar to Samsung Galaxy S7 and excellent build quality. Then it will be awesome 🙂
Wasn’t mi5’s camera a 2.0 aperture? I kind of remember so because many here (myself included) said that it was a step back from the 1.8 on mi4…
However mi5s’ specs are not that difficult to imagine: sd821, up to 6gb of ram, dual camera and a 3000mah battery (or, since xiaomi likes to make it look bigger by being accurate, 3021.18243684 mah). Probably the black bezels will stay there, keeping a better design for mi6.

I have the black version. There is a border, but it is mostly covered by my hand when holding the phone, so you do not notice it under normal use.
I do not deny the border is there if you look, but under normal use you just won’t ever notice… so my issue was with the phrasing. It has a border, and it is perfectly fine 🙂
You must have the black version because in the white version it’s impossible not to see it. I have it on my Nextbit Robin too, it always annoys me.

yeah they dont have ois so they can be forgiven but to have 4axis ois and still be shaky is a disgrace

to be fair around that time alst year there was a mi5 rumour all the time while the min 5 launched early this year….

I got tired of waiting for Xiaomi to offer flagship phones with US LTE. Thankfully Huawei is filling that void and the Honor 8 is excellent so far.

Bought Honor 7 some time ago and I’m surprised how much this device impresses me. I bet Honor 8 makes even better impression, so I can believe you like it.
This is my first Honor phone but I did own a few P phones from Huawei. So far it is one of the best phones I have used in a long time.

I never used a Note 3 Pro so I can’t say. But the Honor 8 is an amazing phone for the money and IMO the best looking phone on the market. It’s everything that the P9 was except for a glass body vs the metal of the P9 and a slightly lower clocked CPU. The glass has proved to be very durable, i dropped it twice already and it has no signs of damage.
Thanks Balco, I am hesitating between Note 3 Pro Special Edition (FDD LTE 800MHz), Xiaomi MI5 64GB and Honor 8. The Honor 8 is sold at 400€ in France so it is above my budget. I will decide between Note 3 Pro and MI5. Honor 8 in blue color is just outstanding, I am sure you bought that color 😀 .

Why would they care about offering US LTE when they are not officially selling there phones in the US.
Because I live in the US that’s why I care. Zuk doesn’t officially sell in the US they have US LTE bands. Huawei doesn’t officially sell the P9 or Mate 8 in the US, they have US LTE bands.
Xiaomi needs to keep up with it’s competitors because their “China first” policy is losing them market share and customers.

Except it is making a difference. The Chinese market is as close to matured as you can get. There is very little room for future growth in China for a company like Xiaomi. The next two biggest markets are the US and India. Xiaomi has had a rough time in India between failed product launches like Mi4i, reports of poor customer service or not being able to sell all it’s phones (MTK). Xiaomi needs the US if it wan’t any sort of future growth, with each new phone they don’t release there they are losing market share. Meanwhile Huawei, OnePlus, ZTE, TCL/Alcatel, Blu/Gionee and several other Chinese competitors are gaining market share in the US. Market share is the most important factor for any of these companies future.
Xiaomi is being hurt by it’s own success. It is too large of a company to be focused almost entirely on China, that works for a company like Meizu who is much smaller.
Really how many phones do you believe that Xiaomi sell unofficially in the US & Europe I doubt its hardly enough to make a major dent for them. I agree that they need to be come and official brand in the countries I mentioned. Because at the moment there is no service centre and no guarantee your buying this phone if you a fan or think that the price is great. But America loves phones on a contract

Phones on a contract are all but dead in America. Most companies don’t offer subsidization anymore which means you either have to buy the phone outright or qualify for payment plans (credit). This is what has allowed brands like OnePlus, Axon, Blu, Alcatel and Honor to become so popular in the US.

Potential buyers expecting its flagships to be toe to toe with best flagships in every area. So like underwhelming camera performance isn’t tolerable for everyone.

Most likely we will see other phones from those Chinese brands at same price range with more or less same spec sheet.

Come on Xiaomi, most of the users don’t need 6GB Ram for god’s sake! Nobody cares about having a CPU with 4 to 10 cores clocked at 3GHz. Most of the people want something pretty solid that will last for 2/3 years without any issues. We want a camera which will do the job in everyday usage and a great battery life.

Literally a better battery, like one that doesn’t swell or explode.
My Honor 8 has excellent battery life and hasn’t exploded yet.

OP3 is a good phone, it’s not “far ahead” of anything though. It is equal to the Mi5, Axon 7, Honor 8, Idol 4s and a few other of the $3-400 budget flagships. Each has their strengths and weakness.

You can access the Mi Cloud contents from a PC, or another smartphone, in case the Xiaomi phone you own fails. If you buy a new Xiaomi phone you can download all your settings from the Mi Cloud and go on almost as nothing happend.
