Leaks claim that Xiaomi will release an Android One Mi5X

A new report has appeared online stating that a variant of the Xiaomi Mi 5X will be launched without MIUI. The phone, codenamed the Xiaomi A1, will supposedly be a cost-effective device running Stock Android as part of the Android One initiative. This means the device will get updates right from Google itself.

For those who need a refresher, the Android One initiative is an effort by Google to team up with manufacturers to produce devices with software updates straight from Google. In a way, it’s a spiritual successor to the Nexus program, only with a much wider range of devices and companies involved.

What’s fairly surprising to us however is that Xiaomi are teaming up with Google to release a Stock Android device. Xiaomi has invested a lot of time and effort into developing their MIUI interface, and it has garnered the company a ton of followers and support.

The decision could be an attempt to appeal to the Western crowd, though we can’t see why as Xiaomi does not officially sell any of their devices in American or European countries. Still, this is a fairly interesting development, and one we’ll definitely follow to see where it goes.

I knew this would happen, eventually. They are just being smart by catering to consumers that rather go for stock. It’s not in any way relevant or clashes with the consumers that prefer MIUI, rather, it’s tapping into another kind of consumers.

Interesting. I personally prefer MIUI over stock Android, but this definitely broadens their appeal. Sounds like a good move.for Xiaomi.

Actually Xiaomi sells their phones officially in Europe (Poland, Ukraine) and South America (Mexico). But this is probably a very low share of their total sales.
