Sony Is Working On The World’s First 4K OLED Smartphone

Sony 4k OLED

Every year at CES, we see Sony coming with new TVs. This year wasn’t an exception. Back in 2017, Sony announced the A1 TV and returned to the high-end OLED TV line. As for the CES 2018, the company uncovered the Bravia A8 series TV sporting a 4K OLED screen. And now, there are assumptions the Japanese tech monster is going to bring this technology to the mobile ecosystem.

Last year, Sony announced the world’s first 4K HDR screen smartphone in face of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. But it uses an LCD technology. In terms of viewing performance, OLED screens are preferable. So all we are waiting for Sony to come in with the first 4K OLED screen smartphone. Nothing certain can be said because the company hasn’t made any announcement hinting at its possible launch. But Sony has posted a job opening and looks for display engineers.

The position requirement clearly shows the manufacturer needs employees to drive display OLED integration to mobile phone products (design/verification/production). This simply means the company is seriously working on a Sony phone with a 4K OLED screen. However, the job opening announcement was made on November 30, 2017, and it was updated on January 12, 2018. This means there are some difficulties with the hiring process. So most likely, we won’t see a Sony premium flagship with an OLED display providing a 4K resolution this year.

On the other hand, other tech giants such as LG, Moto, Google, and others have joined the party of 4K screen smartphones. So we can assume they want to update the current models to 4K OLED screen as well. In this sense, Sony should accelerate the process not to let them outrun itself.

Smartphone displays are a multibillion dollar business, “looking for engineers” is a far stretch from producing 4k displays. Its like saying quantum computing is on its way if they start looking for theoretical physicists.
