Gradient rear of Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is actually transparent (Video)

On September 19, Chinese manufacturing giant, Xiaomi, unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro (on-screen fingerprint version) and Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite (Youth Edition). The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite became Xiaomi’s first smartphone with a gradient rear of Gold and Dream Blue.Ā The design is inspired by the Master of Impressionism, Claude Monet, and the mirror gradient rear uses the top-notch vacuum nano-sputtering process just like Huawei P20. Now, the company has released a new video which shows that the gradient rear of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is actually a transparent glass cover. How is this even possible?

Xiaomi explained that for it to make a transparent glass achieve colorful hues, its engineers used a time-consuming and rigorous engineering process. Xiaomi said that the glass rear was subjected toĀ a number of layers of coating, forming a nano-scale thickness difference on the surface of the glass. This simply means that the thickness of the glass rear is not uniform rather there is a difference which is highly insignificant to the eye but quite significant to light.Ā  Due to theĀ physical and technological differences, parameters such as interference, absorption and diffraction ensures that this glass rear gives a colour when it comes in contact with a dark surface (in this case, the interior of the Mi 8 Lite). Since the glass has different thickness, the shades of the colour produced are different also thus the gradient rear of the Xiaomi Mi 8.
