Google will shortly start inviting users to try new search engines and browsers on Android

Google Pixel 6

Over the next few weeks, all European owners of an Android smartphone will see a new screen on Google Play inviting them to try and install new search engines or web browsers.

The decision comes following the EU fine and part of Google’s new policy following the changes imposed by the European Commission.

Whenever you receive a new update on Google Play, consumers will be presented with two screens where they will be invited to try new search engines and new web browsers other than those pre-installed. Each screen will present a total of five applications, including those already installed on the device.

If you install a new search engine or a new browser directly from one of these screens, Android will guide you through the installation and a Google Chrome screen will ask you if you want to change your browser’s default search engine.

The new screens are currently in rollout and will arrive to all European Android devices over the next few weeks. This is only a first approach following the changes imposed by the European Commission and the implementation with the operating system will be further improved over time.
