WCDMA Xiaomi Hongmi will launch end of September

china unicom xiaomi hongmi

The entry-level Xiaomi Hongmi has been getting a lot of attention since it launched in July, now news of a WCDMA version is sure to excite international Xiaomi fans!

The Xiaomi Hongmi is current the cheapest and largest Xiaomi phone which you can buy (the Mi3 is larger but on sale just yet). The only issue we have had is that the current Hongmi is only available in a China Mobile TD-SCDMA compatible model. This is no use to us here at GizChina as we all use China Unicom and no use to International fans as TD-SCDMA only works in China!

DSC 0587 WCDMA Xiaomi Hongmi will launch end of September

We have already reported an a WCDMA version of the Hongmi here, but now it looks like Xiaomi will soon make an official announcement about the new phone! The WCDMA version of the Hongmi will be designed to work with China Unicom, however some lucky international fans will be able to make use of the phone on 3G networks outside of China!

The 799 Yuan 4.7-inch phone boasts impressive hardware for the price including a 1.5Ghz quad-core MT6589T processor, 1GB RAM, 8 mega-pixel Samsung rear camera, dual SIM support and SD card memory expansion.

Hi, Robin Maxwell here! Mobile technology is my passions, and while I've been known to dabble with iOS devices I'm a firm Android convert, currently waiting for the Oppo Find 5 to launch!!

Very interesting news! But we still need to wait which 3G bands will be available: 850? 900? 2100MHz?

    • http://www.gizchina.com Andi

Yep, still need to see what those bands are going to be. Fingers crossed though!

      • Yorien

I feel they’ll have the same bands as one of the other Xiaomi models.

I’d go for the M2S bands: 850/1900/2100 MHz, since it’s a sort of “international” model and both 850 and 2100 bands are the most used worldwide.

If it is not the M2S, I’d go for 3G dual band 850/2100 as many other MTK phones around have.

  • Peter

hmm, so it will be 2100MHz, and thats it ?
ill buy immediately if it will have 900MHz :)

  • USMAN

THATS A GREAT NEWS. BUT IN MY COUNTRY ALL THE NETWORKS JUST OFFER 2G AND EDGE SERVICES, WITH FREQUENCY BANDS LIKE 900/1800
SO IS WCDMA GOING TO WORK ON 2G OR 2.5G NETWORKS?

    • pa5t1s

      You must check those specifications:
      Connectivity Technology: GSM + WCDMA
      Network Band:
      GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz <– 2G (minimum required :)
WCDMA 850/900/2100MHz <– faster links (mainly data) like 3G
      4G is another problem…

  • Simon

Andi can you do a poll (if possible) to see which Xiaomi people intend to buy ?

  • helm10101

I wish they will add it MHL or NFC or both :D

    • http://yash3339.wordpress.com yash3339

Isn’t that too much to ask for in a 130$ phone ;)

      • atulm

        Hehehe… lol..

      • Tudy

Let’s face it, it won’t be just 130$ price for us, international buyers… :/

        • Zad

Just wait a little, I’m sure you will find it at ~130$ on aliexpress.

          • pepito

Si en aliexpres está la version china está por 164-170$. La versión europea será más cara debido al WCDMA que es más caro implementar así que de 130$ olvidaros …

          • MaxSE

            On Aliexpress? Probably fake :(

      • atulm

For sure it won’t be 130$ for international customer. And will not be lesser than 230$

  • batman

That phone looks really thick. What is the mm dimension?

  • Elvin
