Micromax kicks off operations in Russia with 5 smartphones

Micromax has been eyeing a spot on the global map for a while now, and their expansion to Russian markets might just be the first checkpoint.

The fast-rising Indian manufacturer announced foray into the Russian market with 5 devices, namely the Micromax Canvas Beat A114R, Canvas Social A94, Bolt A61, Bolt A36 and Bolt A28. A Russian version of their website is up and running already, on which device listings can be found. Noteworthy is the fact that both Canvas devices launched are seen as variants of handsets already existing in the Indian market, while the Bolt series phones are launched as-is.

Gizchina News of the week

The Canvas Beat A114R (R for Russia) can be considered as the distant, Russian cousin of the Canvas 2.2 A114 that goes in India. It comes with a 1.2GHz Broadcom quad-core processor, 1GB RAM and a 5-inch qHD screen. On the other hand, the Canvas Social A94 is more or less a Canvas MAd A94 with a new identity and same internals. However, Micromax aren’t offering Russian users the chance to earn with their device. The Bolt series of smartphones is mainly targeted at first-time smartphone buyers, with display sizes measuring 4-inch or lower across all three devices.

Russia is one of the largest consumers of Chinese electronics, which is perhaps why Micromax eye the market as a big fish — after all, Micromax’s devices are direct competitors to low-cost Chinese phones. It will be interesting to see how welcoming Russians will be to a brand that’s well-recognized in the Indian sub-continent.

Is Micromax a real Indian phone manufacture or a re badge of Chinese products. If Micromax is a genuine maker of cell phones than it Is good that India can now compete with China.

Micromax is a trading company that re-badges and resells existing Chinese OEM phones. Micromax has no factory and no R&D.

It puzzles me why GizChina would even bother with Micromax coverage, since it’s called GizCHINA, not GizIndia. I suppose Yash Garg keeps writing about Micromax out of patriotism, however misplaced it maybe.

Then again, we should give Yash a break. The only news out of India these days seems to be gang rape related. A little Micromax news does break up the monotony and reminds us that India is not all about misogyny and gang rapes.

        Because Hugh Jackman promotes Micromax.

Better drop Hugh Jackman and use the money to pay the Chinese OEM to add an anti-rape alert app to their phones.

Chinese do not develop software, they make assemble the mobile phones. I do agree though that such app would be a good addition, though more a gimmick than of any real use.

Chinese don’t develop software? LOL, and Indians never gang rape nor eat curry, do they?

              What bloody nonsense!

I had a feeling that I am conversing with a racist & now I am convinced.

How is it racist? Do gang rapes not take place in India with increasingly alarming frequency, and do Indians not consume curry?

My suspicions are confirmed: I’m conversing with an overly sensitive, passive defender of misogyny with an oversized inferiority complex stemming from perceived collective, historical, and civilizational failures.

You know all too well that you are racist.
And a quick Google search also reveals that per 100,000 people there are 1.8 Rapes in India as opposed to 30 in the US, So your argument is fucked. And as for the Curry, yes Indians do eat curry like REST OF WORLD!

So if gang rapes happen in all countries then why do you insist it has to do with race?

            • Nik
              January 24, 2014

I never linked Rapes with race. It had to do with your ‘Curry’ remark. And about your suspicions, I guess you are just describing yourself trying to find acceptance.

So you are saying eating curry has to do with race?! You are accusing ME of being racist?

For the record, I do enjoy curry, a lot.

I guess anyone can clearly see what your intentions were after reading above comments. If you’ve had a change of heart all of a sudden, then good for you! Keep enjoying curry!

Wow, an obvious cultural chauvinist accusing me of being racist. After being shown the absurdity of associating gang rape and eating curry with race, you are now furiously backpedalling.

Good job there, really good job showing how racist you are.

I will leave it to Micromax to decide if its phones urgently need anti-rape apps.

Micromax basically outsources production to OEMs in China for obvious reasons. They’re massive in their home country, in the top 3 when you’re talking sales volume. Pricing-wise they’re VERY competitive, often cheaper than similarly spec’d Chinese phones. Still some way to go quality wise, but it is on the way up.

      • bridgebuilder78
        January 24, 2014

I don’t think you know what outsourcing means.

Micromax doesn’t have an R&D team, an industrial design team, or actual electrical and mechanical engineers on its payroll. It merely picks out some pre-existing Chinese phones, re-badges them (with rebadging done by the Chinese), and then imports them into India.

Here’s an useful example. Say I visit India and see some nice locally made wheelbarrows. I see a market for these in Somalia. I buy 1000 units of the wheelbarrow, rename it as the SomaliTurboWheels, import them into Somalia, and sell them at a markup of 20%. In this example, NO outsourcing takes place, because these wheelbarrows exist prior to my noticing them, and I have absolutely no input on their design. The commercial transaction in this example is called import trade, and I’m a simple trader.

Micromax’s business model is the same, and therefore it is a trading company. Full stop.

I have yet to see any Micromax model being cheaper than its original, un-rebadged OEM phone. The quality of the imports is not ideal because Micromax picks the cheapest OEM phones available to maximize margins. I wouldn’t be surprised if Micromax buys from reject lots as many Indian traders do.

Pardon me if I find your continued coverage of Micromax asinine. Why does GizCHINA (with emphasis on CHINA) cover Micromax, which is an INDIAN trading company? Why should the readers be subjected to news of what Micromax re-labels and imports into India?

But hey, whatever floats your boat. But please for the love of God, before your excitedly write up another Micromax article, go to Aliexpress website and search for devices with the same specs, and there you will find the original Chinese OEM devices often at prices 20% cheaper and having already been on sale for weeks and even months! Better yet, if you speak Chinese, go to Alibaba, and there you will find them at least another 10% cheaper!

Maybe I’m asking too much, for you are not a professional journalist, so I can’t expect you to do basic research first, no matter how simple it is and how little time it takes you.

But trust me, your Micromax articles are making you look like a real arse. I’m pointing this out because I like you, and I have really enjoyed your non-Micromax articles. This is my way of showing appreciation for your good work at GizCHINA, of which I’m an avid reader.

Now I know that Micromax is a Chinese product and therefore I think it appearance in GizChina is OK..

          • bridgebuilder78
            January 24, 2014

No, it’s not OK. Why? Because Micromax is being presented as the manufacturer and, more importantly, the designer of these devices when it is NEITHER.

Micromax is a TRADING company, and a trading company doesn’t deserve to be here. Full stop.

LOL! You are nuts! Do you think most Chinese companies DESIGN their phones?

The title should really be “Micromax exports 5 re-badged, Chinese OEM smartphones to Russia”.

Seriously now, why even waste column inches on a trading company?
