Jio launches in India, offers free voice calls, texts and super-cheap LTE data

While not directly related to Chinese tech, here’s something we thought GizChina readers would enjoy reading. Reliance Jio have announced their data and talktime plans for the Indian market, and it’s something like never before.

Mukesh Ambani-led Jio will offer free voice calls and text messages (SMS) to Jio subscribers, along with extremely affordable 4G LTE data.

Plans with free calling start as low as 149 INR ($2.2) per month for 300MB data and 100 SMS (this is the only plan with limited SMS) go all the way up to 4,999 INR ($74) for 75GB 4G LTE data + 150GB JioNet WiFi hotspot data. Have a look at the other plans below.

That isn’t all, smartphone users in India can avail a no-cost SIM from Jio starting 5th September and avail free services (LTE data, calls) until 31st December this year.

I’ll probably finally start making use of the dual SIM slots that Chinese phone makers provide. It’s the 999 INR ($15) plan I’m eyeing, with 10GB of data (+20GB hotspot data). Jealous much? 😉

That’s not even close to very good.
