Nubia Red Magic 5G has a hidden 120Hz refresh rate mode

In March this year, Nubia unveiled a new gaming smartphone for the fans of its Red Magic series. The device dubbed Nubia Red Magic 5G came with impressive specifications hitting the market as the first smartphone to flaunt a 144Hz refresh rate display. We all know how this high-quality display can offer a smooth experience for users as well as a stunning gaming experience. However, the most advanced refresh rate surely consumes a lot of battery. For that reason, the company allows users to toggle between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 144Hz. Unfortunately, there is no 120Hz, but developers found a way to contour this limitation.

The experienced users at XDA-Developers found that the 120Hz is available, but hidden. To make things even more interesting, it doesn’t require root. The option can be found with an app dubbed Activity Launcher. It allows users to create shortcuts for various Android processes. Developers found the specific process where the 120Hz option is available. Furthermore, there are other hidden features like color modes for the screen, round icons through a theme, and an option that allows the user to change the quality of the screen recording feature.

  • com.qualcomm.qti.qcolo.QColorActivity
    • There are 8 screen color modes available in this sub-setting.
  • cn.nubia.factory.ChooseFpsActivity
    • You can activate the 120Hz mode from this menu.
    • To go back to the standard refresh rate settings you’ll have to enable “default auto FPS” in the hidden menu.

Are these features planned for a future software update?

Now the question that remains is why Nubia included so many customization features but didn’t make it available for users? Perhaps a future software update will bring these hidden features to the surface. But considering the company’s historic with updates, we believe that in a short time, the above solution is the best option for your Nubia Red Magic 5G.
