Taiwanese chip manufacturer MediaTek revised its forecast of 5G chip shipments in 2020 in February this year, adjusting its expected shipments to 200 million. Since then, we have seen the company released up to five 5G phones. But it is not going to stop here. It turns out there will be a MediaTek low-end 5G chip coming quite soon.
DigiTimes’ latest report further clarified the chip manufacturer’s strategy. The report stated that MediaTek plans to launch a new 5G mobile chip series that will be deployed on entry-level smartphones. According to the source citing industry sources, the debut of this chip will come in late July. But we will start getting relevant news soon.
The introduction of the new series, especially the introduction of entry-level chips, will increase the shipment of MediaTek’s mobile chips. The company’s 5G chipset already includes the Dimensity 1000, Dimensity 1000L, Dimensity 1000+, Dimensity 800, and Dimensity 820. It is expected that the company will also launch the mid-range Dimensity 600 series. According to reports, the series has already received large orders even before its launch.
In the report at the end of May, some media pointed out that Qualcomm and MediaTek, two manufacturers that can supply 5G processors to smartphone manufacturers on a large scale, will launch entry-level 5G smartphone processors in the third quarter of this year. So this news is in line with what have heard before.
Is this MediaTek low-end 5G chip the Dimensity 600?
However, just recently, we learned the Taiwanese company will launch the Dimensity 600 series. As the name implies, the Dimensity 600 line chips should be the MediaTek low-end 5G chip we are talking about.
According to the Taiwan Economic Daily, MediaTek’s mid-range Dimensity 600 chip will officially arrive this quarter. At present, MediaTek has received a large number of orders. Furthermore, many customers have said that they will use the chip in the second half of the year.
MediaTek will hold an earnings report (legal corporate briefing) at the end of this month. There are speculations that the company will announce its second-quarter financial report and new technologies. Furthermore, it may also announce its third-quarter operating outlook and its views on the 5G market development.
In addition to the report meeting at the end of the month, the international ultra-large integrated circuit seminar focusing on 5G and AI technology will start on August 10. TSMC, Intel, IBM, MediaTek, etc. will all attend. There are also expectations that there will be new products at this event.
