Garmin Forerunner watches gets a controversial new feature

Garmin Forerunner

It’s not surprising that Garmin has evolved over the years to offer GPS-enabled wearables for sports. At its inception, the company first gained notoriety with GPS tracking devices. These watches use memory-in-pixel screens rather than typical LCDs to address the problem of readability in direct sunshine. With the new Garmin Forerunner 265 and 965 smartwatches, which both feature new AMOLED screens, Garmin is currently updating its range of running products. But is that the correct move?

This is the first time that Garmin will attempt to use AMOLED displays on its devices. For this reason, these smartwatches come with a brighter display of most of the features. Although these screens don’t always have a good image with users who prefer readability in direct sunshine. Also, there is the question of battery life as the AMOLED screen consumes more power. Because of this, it might be challenging to offer these newest versions to current Garmin Forerunner 955 and 255 owners.

This is particularly true given that, aside from the screen, the new Forerunners are virtually identical to their forebears in terms of tech and function — the most recent version uses the same chipset and satellite connectivity.

Forerunner 265 and 265S

The Forerunner 265 is an improved version of last year’s edition and is a lightweight, midrange GPS-connected wristwatch. There are two versions available: the larger Forerunner 265 measures 46mm, while the 265S is thinner at 42mm. The 265S has a battery life of up to 15 days in watch mode and up to 24 hours in GPS mode. On the other hand, its big brother reduces that to a maximum of 20 hours of GPS and up to 13 days with GPS turned off.

Numerous features shared by both choices include SpO2 monitors, which measure blood oxygen saturation, sleep monitoring functionality, and performance measures. Additional adaptive training choices include two of the following: daily recommended workouts based on event data input into the free Garmin Coach plans and Garmin Connect calendar.

The watch also has audio memory and wireless payment tools. The Garmin Forerunner 265 is currently on sale for $450 and offers a basic monitor for health features. However, the Forerunner 965 might be ideal for you if you want a few more fitness actions.

The Forerunner 965 adds a few unique health-tracking features yet offers the same basic features as the cheap Forerunner 265. Garmin Golf support, real-time endurance, thorough climbing measures, heat acclimation, and load ratio (in order to avoid injury, this allows you to track your training loads) are a few features that are exclusive to the more costly edition.

The more costly variant has a 47mm case size, a 1.4-inch AMOLED screen, and a light titanium frame. Unlike the 265 model, it offers a battery life in GPS mode of up to 31 hours, which can be increased to a maximum of 23 days by moving to watch mode. For what it’s worth, the Garmin Forerunner 955 stated that it could last up to 15 days and 42 hours in watch mode and GPS mode, respectively.

Garmin’s choice to use AMOLED screens for its most recent running smartwatches, while contentious, places them on a level with many of the top Android smartwatches, including Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 series. However, some might wonder if these new features truly reflect a boost over the previous versions.
