Mid-range Samsung Exynos Chipsets to Get AMD-based GPUs

Samsung Exynos Custom GPU

If you can recall, Samsung officially announced its partnership with AMD about two years ago. The partnership solely focused on developing new in-house GPUs for Samsung Exynos chipsets. Among all, the Exynos 2200 was the first to use an AMD-based GPU.

As AMD is one of the dominant manufacturers in the PC GPU space and the Samsung Exynos 2200 came with RDNA 2 GPU, people were expecting a lot from it. But in reality, the GPU of the chipset turned out to be very average in most cases. As I covered earlier this year, the chipset only excelled in ray tracing performance.

Now, Samsung is planning to bring the AMD GPUs to the rest of the Exynos lineup, which includes the mid-range chipsets.

Mid-Range Samsung Exynos Chipsets To Have AMD mRDNA GPUs

Samsung is reportedly planning to pack its upcoming Exynos 1430 and Exynos 1480 with AMD mRDNA-based GPUs. Both of these chipsets belong to the mid-range category and should come out sometime early next year. As Samsungā€™s lineup goes, these could be powering the Samsung Galaxy A15 and Galaxy A55.

Samsung Exynos x AMD Radeon

While Samsung is planning to use a new GPU architecture for the mid-range Exynos chipsets, you shouldnā€™t really have high expectations from it. Instead of offering powerful GPUs, Samsung is currently more focused on improving ISPs on the future mid-range chipsets.

For those unaware, ISP stands for Image Signal Processor, which means the upcoming mid-range Samsung Exynos may not offer a class-leading gaming experience. Instead, they will be prioritizing image captures more. Also, itā€™s not surprising to see Samsung planning to bring AMD GPUs to the mid-range chips.

Samsung Exynos

After all, the partnership between Samsung and AMD is meant to be long-term. That means we might even see the entry-level Exynos chipsets come with AMD-based GPUs. And when that happens, the entire Exynos lineup will be powered by AMD GPUs.
