Google has officially started rolling out three new security features for Android devices, which were first introduced during Google I/O 2024. These features are designed to enhance the security of phones running Android 10 or later and are being delivered through a Google Play Services update. 1. Theft Detection Lock
The first of the new features is the Theft Detection Lock. Using machine learning (ML), this feature can detect when someone tries to steal a phone from the user. Whether the thief is on foot, riding a bike, or even in a car, the system recognizes the suspicious movement and immediately locks the phone. This automatic lock prevents unauthorized access to apps, files, and other personal data. The goal is to make it difficult for a thief to access the device, keeping the user’s sensitive information safe.
2. Offline Device Lock
The second feature, Offline Device Lock, is designed for situations where a thief tries to disconnect the phone from the internet. If the phone stays offline for an extended period, the system automatically locks the screen. This prevents anyone from tampering with the phone while it’s offline and adds another layer of protection in cases where someone deliberately keeps a stolen device disconnected from the web.
3. Remote Lock
The third feature is Remote Lock, which allows users to lock their device remotely by simply using their phone number. If a user cannot access the Find My Device tool or their Google Account password is compromised, they can still secure their phone. A Gradual Rollout
These features were first released in beta back in August, starting in Brazil, according to the expert Mishaal Rahman. Google has now started a wider rollout. And the final versions of these features will be available globally by the end of the year. The rollout ties to Google Play Services beta version 24.40.33. Signaling that the company is steadily moving towards full implementation.
