Lava launches a super cheap mobile phone for under $80

Lava has announced the launch of the Yuva Star 2 in India. This is its latest budget smartphone in the Yuva series. Positioned as the successor to last year’s Yuva Star, the new device is aimed at users seeking an affordable first smartphone. Priced at just ₹6,499 (approximately $80), the phone is already available across offline retail stores in India.

Large display and refined design

The Yuva Star 2 features a 6.75-inch LCD with HD+ resolution (720 x 1600 pixels), a 60Hz refresh rate, and a 2.5D curved glass finish. Lava is promoting the design as one of the key upgrades, offering the device in two finishes—Radiant Black and Sparkling Ivory—with a glossy back and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for easy access.

Basic hardware with Android 14 Go

Under the hood, the phone is powered by an octa-core UNISOC processor. It comes with 4GB of RAM and an additional 4GB of virtual RAM through expansion. In addition to the RAM, this device supports 64GB of internal storage. The storage is expandable up to 512GB via a microSD card.

The Yuva Star 2 runs Android 14 Go Edition, tailored for budget devices. It also offers a lighter version of Android with key Google apps optimized for low-power hardware.

Cameras and connectivity

On the back, the phone sports a 13MP main camera accompanied by a secondary AI lens and an LED flash. The front camera is a 5MP unit for selfies and video calls. Lava has also included features like anonymous call recording, FM radio, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Connectivity options include dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and a USB Type-C port. The phone is also dust- and water-resistant, according to the company.

Long battery life with USB-C charging

Powering the Yuva Star 2 is a 5,000mAh battery, which supports 10W wired charging via the USB Type-C port. The company promises all-day usage for typical users.
