Chinese manufacturing giant, Xiaomi, has registered a research and development center in Tampere, Finland. Xiaomi Finland CEO, David Arthur Felix, is the new general manager of the research and development centre. The new R&D centre in Finland will focus on camera technology research and development. It is foreseeable that its achievements will improve mobile photography in the future.
As a home of Nokia, Finland has a long list of imaging engineers and related teams. As early as 2016, Huawei also set up a research and development center in Tampere, Finland. At the time, a good number of Nokia’s imaging engineers joined Huawei. It’s possible that the Chinese manufacturer will also poach some imaging engineers from Nokia with good offers.

In addition, the registration of Xiaomi Finnish R&D company may be related to a cooperation agreement signed by Xiaomi and Nokia. In July 2017, the Chinese OEM publicly announced that it has signed a business cooperation agreement with Nokia and a multi-year patent license agreement, including cross-licensing the standard-essential patents for mobile networks. The transaction also includes Xiaomi’s acquisition of some of Nokia’s patent assets.
Undoubtedly, after obtaining the patent license of Nokia and acquiring some patent assets, Xiaomi further cleared the obstacles of foreign layout and laid the foundation for global R&D and development. So whether Xiaomi’s layout action can be effectively translated into mobile video technology, we will wait and see.
