Xiaomi patented fingerprint recognition technology anywhere on the screen

Qualcomm on-display-fingerprint

Although in-display fingerprint recognition systems have already been actively in use in Android smartphones since at least 2018; the technology has not developed much recently, but now Xiaomi has presented its own solution. It allows you to touch your finger to any part of the gadget screen to identify the user.

Xiaomi patented fingerprint recognition technology anywhere on the screen

According to the latest data from the Chinese Patent Office, the company has received a patent for a fingerprint scanning technology; that allows you to use the scanner more freely without having to put your finger on a given point on the screen. In the patent, Xiaomi described the operation of a network of integrated infrared LED elements located between an AMOLED display and a capacitive touch layer. The network of “receivers” will be under the display. These elements will form the basic building blocks of the new scanner.

When the user touches the screen with a finger, the touch layer registers the touch, its location and the shape of the fingerprint, after which the LED elements will begin to emit infrared light in the desired area. In this case, elements in other parts of the screen will remain inactive.

The infrared light is then reflected off the fingertip and projected onto the receivers. The system will process the data to obtain a “card” of the fingerprint; and the smartphone will compare them with the sample saved in the memory; the user will be able to unlock the device by touching any part of the screen.

Back in August, Huawei patented its own technology for a similar purpose, in several markets, including China, Europe, USA, Japan, Korea and India, but the development has not found commercial use – it is possible that this is due to sanctions from the United States, which seriously restrict technological capabilities of the company. Since Xiaomi did not yet face such sanctions, it is possible that new scanners will launch in the foreseeable future.

Xiaomi smartphones

On the last day of last year, Xiaomi 12, 12 Pro and 12X smartphones went on sale in China; which were sold for almost $ 300 million in 5 minutes. Now the exact data and comparison with the results of the Xiaomi Mi 11 series have appeared. So, sales of the Xiaomi 12 series in 5 minutes reached 1.8 billion yuan (or $ 283 million); and the previous record for Xiaomi smartphones belonged to the Xiaomi Mi 11 series; which for 5 minutes were sold for 1.5 billion yuan ($ 236 million).
