Okay, big news from
OpenAI. They just
released GPT-5.2, and they are calling it their most capable model
ever for professional knowledge work. It came out on a Thursday! This update comes after a ton of companies adopted ChatGPT. We already know that regular users were saving between 40 and 60 minutes every day, and heavy users were somehow saving over 10 hours a week! That’s incredible.
The goal of GPT-5.2 is simple: make that productivity boost even bigger. This model is much better at serious tasks like making spreadsheets, generating slides for presentations, writing code, dealing with images, summarizing huge documents, and handling those complex workflows that take multiple steps. They built this whole thing with help from NVIDIA and Microsoft, using the crazy-powerful H100 and H200 GPUs in Azure data centers.
Three Ways to Use the New Brain
For people using
ChatGPT, the new model should feel much more consistent and structured across the three different versions:
- GPT-5.2 Instant: This is the fast one. It gives you quicker responses and is better for things like finding quick information, technical writing, translations, and following step-by-step guides. It's the daily workhorse.
- GPT-5.2 Thinking: This one is for the deep work. It’s better at things like coding, summarizing long documents, solving math and logic problems, and managing tasks that have multiple stages.
- GPT-5.2 Pro: This is for the toughest questions you have. It takes longer to respond, but the quality of the reasoning and the output is supposed to be the highest possible.
| Mode (ChatGPT) | API Name | Main Use |
| Instant | gpt-5.2-chat-latest | Speed, quick info, translation |
| Thinking | gpt-5.2 | Complex coding, long documents, multi-stage logic |
| Pro | gpt-5.2-pro | Difficult, high-quality reasoning |
OpenAI wants to remind everyone to
double-check the outputs for anything super critical. That’s just good advice, really.
The Performance Jumps Are Wild
The new model is setting crazy new records across tons of tests. On one called GDPval, which checks performance on 44 different professional jobs, it actually surpasses human industry professionals.
- Human Expert Level Achieved: GPT-5.2 Thinking is the first model from OpenAI to match or even beat human expert levels on GDPval, outperforming or tying top pros in 70.9% of comparisons.
- Speed and Cost: It generates GDPval outputs eleven times faster than human experts and costs less than 1% of what those experts charge, based on old numbers.
- Hallucination Drop: GPT-5.2 Thinking is much more reliable, reducing the rate of errors by a whopping 30% compared to the old GPT-5.1 Thinking. That means better reliability for research and decision-making.
Partners like Shopify, Notion, and Zoom are reporting much better performance in tasks that take a long time, and the agentic coding performance on benchmarks like SWE-Bench Pro hit a record 55.6%.
Tool Use, Vision, and Context
The new model is much better at seeing things and using tools.
- Long-Context Reasoning: On a test for long documents (MRCRv2), it reached near-perfect accuracy for tasks requiring it to track four pieces of information across 256k tokens. This is great for legal contracts and huge reports.
- Vision Improvements: It has halved the error rates when reading charts and understanding software interfaces. It’s much better at realizing where things are positioned in an image, like a dashboard or technical diagram.
- Tool Calling: The reliability on complex tool-use workflows reached an amazing 98.7%. It can coordinate multi-agent scenarios, like fully rebooking a customer who missed a flight, where the old model just produced partial results.
Science, Math, and Safety
GPT-5.2 Pro is a beast for science. It scored 93.2% on the tough GPQA Diamond test. For expert-level math problems (FrontierMath), it solved 40.3%, which is a new record.
Safety is also a focus. They built on the safety features from GPT-5 to give more reliable responses for sensitive topics like self-harm or mental health. They are also rolling out a new system to automatically apply content protections for users under 18.
Pricing and Availability
The rollout is starting today for paid ChatGPT users (Plus, Pro, Go, Business, and Enterprise), but it will be gradual.
API Pricing: The price went up, but OpenAI says the efficiency makes up for it.
- GPT-5.2 (Thinking): $1.75 per 1M input tokens and $14 per 1M output tokens.
- Cached Inputs: You get a 90% discount on cached input tokens, making repeated use much cheaper.
This is a huge leap forward, focused entirely on making AI a better, more reliable, and more powerful tool for professional work.
