MWC: Exclusive Hands on video with the Ubuntu Meizu MX3

ubuntu meizu mx3 mwc 2014

First official hands on with the Ubuntu Meizu MX3, one of the world’s first Linux powered smartphones!

Eduardo, Editor in Chief at GizChina.es, is making the rounds at MWC for us this year and has managed to get some exclusive hands on time with the latest device from Meizu, the Ubuntu Meizu MX3 phone!

For some time we have posted rumours and reports that Meizu and Canonical were joining in a partnership and it wasn’t until just before the start of Mobile World Congress that things got official.

Gizchina News of the week

This brief hands on taken by GizChina.es shows a comparison between the standard Meizu MX3 running Flyme based on Android and the Ubuntu version of the MX3.

Hands on with the Ubuntu Meizu MX3

Meizu mentioned during the hands on that the phone on show at MWC is still running a development version of the Linux OS, however the GizChina.es team found that the phone was fast with only the camera app causing any problems.

What do you think of the Ubuntu Meizu MX3?

We will have more hands on videos direct from MWC 2014 shortly!

Hmmm, seems we’ll have to wait until an operative version comes out!

No more news or launch dates? :/

Thx for the info (didn’t know about “picuntu”). I’m waiting for the smartphone arrival (have no other devices apart from a Ramos i9 tablet), I guess the “Big bang” of Ubuntu will come with 15.04, as 64 bits devices will be flooding the market (hopefully Cortex A57, not only that A53 MediaTek showed). There they could really meet the requirements a desktop-like device must have. Real convergence in your palm, nice accessories like the TCL “dumb laptop” will make sense with a full desktop OS under the hood.

iOS/OSX is NOT based on Linux. They don’t share a single line of code and are developed completely seperate from each other.

Agreed. Only tech illiterate people don’t know the difference, and any tech blog worth their salt has someone on staff that should have enough of a tech education to know that already.
And the snarkiness of “If you want to get like that then the iPhone is the first Linux phone.” was rather uncalled for and unprofessional for someone that is supposed to be helpful.

Sorry my mistake I believed they were both based on UNIX.

I mean no disrespect, it just seemed a tad on the harsh side when you posted it. I also apologize if my tone was harsh as well.

You should read the wikipedia pages for UNIX, Linux and OSX. It might be a bit confusing for some. Linux is a UNIX-like OS build from scratch by Linus Torvalds to mimic the UNIX OSs in the 90s which cost way to much for the average CS student back in the day. His “insperation” was Minix (another UNIX-like OS). Many call Solaris, the BSDs and OSX real UNIX since they have ties to the original UNIX from Bell Labs. They are all part of the “UNIX family” and share common UNIX characteristics like the File System Hierachy, everything is a file etc. Still they don’t all share code and are by no means binary compatabile.

Ubuntu seems to be running more smoothly than either TouchWiz or Flyme on Samsung hardware (Meizu MX3 runs on the same chip as the Galaxy S4).
