Lenovo building new brand to slay Xiaomi

For the past 4 years Xiaomi have proven to be the thorn in the side of a great deal of Chinese and domestic phone makers. Some have tackled the problem by launching a new low-cost line (see Huawei Honor) and some are creating an entire new brand.

It has been revealed by the Wall Street Journal that Lenovo are taking the second option to take on Xiaomi. Of course full details of the new Lenovo sub-brand haven’t been announced but the report does tell us that Lenovo will be launching the brand around April 2015.

Gizchina News of the week

Lenovo currently have some great phones on the market, but are struggling to really disrupt the phone market. Hopefully a new brand with new values and determination will see some real competition for Xiaomi in the near future.

Lenovo is one of the most expensive brands. If they are building a premier brand like Nubia, then they are wasting their time. They better follow Oppo’s approach with Oneplus.

If they did, when would we buy our phones?

Wasn’t referring to the negative aspect. I was more about a pocket friendly approach.

That is the same with their laptop : good but too expensive.

Lenovo is in the process of purchasing Motorola from Google. Perhaps that is going to be their “new” brand.

The deal still hasn’t closed yet, it is expected to close by the end of this year but they are still going through the process.

Its quite downmarket for brand like lenovo. Lenovo has some great devices , what lenovo lack is a mass appeal like Xiaomi generates with its devices. Perhaps lenovo is too soon in its lunch of devices so that it removes the consumer curiosity factor and less gives less time for R&D . To beat xiaomi lenovo should imbibe some asthetics into its device and keep teasing consumer base with some innovative designs and specs and surprise consumer based at lunch with an exciting price tags . After all smartphone is truly about selling an experience rather than specs and android.

New product must be better than Redmi 1s other wise it is just a waste.

In today’s market 2GHz processor, 2GB ram, 5Inch display, 8mp and 2mp cam, Wifi, 2sim and with latest software at the rate $100 is a competition. So companies must outsource the materials to build this type of phone, then only they can survive.

Lenovo is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, behind Samsung and Apple. Fourth is Huawei and fifth is Xiaomi. I would not say that “Lenovo are struggling to really disrupt the phone market” at least sales-wise.
