The jump to 12GB addresses that directly. Apple Intelligence features like writing tools, image generation, and on-device summarization run more smoothly with additional memory. For students and everyday professionals — the Neo's target audience — this means AI features that actually work rather than offloading to the cloud constantly.
The GPU Question
The 5-core GPU in the laptop version versus the 6-core in the
iPhone 17 Pro isn't a compromise Apple is hiding — it's a documented pattern going back to the A15 Bionic era, when the
MacBook Air received a 4-core GPU version while the
iPhone 13 Pro got 5 cores. Battery life is the governing factor. A laptop sitting in a bag during a lecture needs to last eight hours. Dialing back one GPU core to achieve that is an engineering trade-off that makes sense for the use case.
The A19 Pro's 40% GPU improvement over the A18 Pro means even the 5-core laptop variant will be noticeably faster than the current model — capable of light creative work, video editing, and AI-intensive tasks that the Neo 1 handles less comfortably.
