Video: Zopo ZP990 Captain S, 2GB RAM 32GB ROM unboxing and hands-on!

Another long-term test device has landed at the GizChina office. Unboxing and hands on video of the Zopo ZP990 Captain S, 6-inch 1080 phablet here!

Yesterday evening we received to more packages containing great new Chinese phones to review over the coming weeks. As would luck would have it I opened up the packaging containing Zopo’s latest 1080 phablet first!

Before we get in to things I would like to say thanks to Zopomobileshop.com for sending us this review phone along with all the Zopo phones we have reviewed to date! Thank you very much!

[templatic_contentbox type=”info” title=”Editors note”] This is not the full review of the Zopo ZP990. This is just our first impressions and unboxing of the phablet. A full review will be published with benchmarks, photos, video etc in the coming weeks. [/templatic_contentbox]

Zopo ZP990 Captain S Specifications

[komper pid=109 compareform=no]

The Zopo ZP990 Captain S is the first 6-inch phablet with a FHD 1080 display from Zopo and it’s the first we have ever had on a long-term test, so I was pretty excited even before opening the box, but even more so when I actually got a look at the model we have been sent.

zopo ZP990 captain s features

We have the top of the range Captain S on review which comes with 2GB RAM and 32GB memory! Combine that with the huge 1920 x 1080 display and 1.5Ghz quad-core MT6589T processor and you have got pretty much all the bases covered.

Zopo ZP990 first impressions

zopo zp990 captain s size comparision

Gizchina News of the week

After opening the excellent packaging the first thing which grabs you is the sheer size of the ZPP990. My daily driver is a 4.3-inch Xiaomi Mi2, and we test and use 5-inch 1080 phones all the time, but getting this 6-inched in your hand and it really does feel impressively large.

zopo zp990 captain s rear

Despite the large size it feels very comfortable when held single-handed. This is partially due to the rounded rear case and slightly rubberized finish, but mainly (I believe) due to the narrow bezels which help keep the overall size down even with the large screen.

After testing plenty of Zopo phones over the past few months I was eager to see if the this big phablet shared it’s smaller brother tendency to bend. As you can see in the video there is a bit of flex, but it is much sturdier than the ZP980 and Zopo C2, and with the battery in the body is stiffer still. It seems Zopo have addressed this issue and I don’t think I would worry too much about it with the Captain S.

zopo zp990 captain s one handed

With the phablet being brand new and straight out of the box I haven’t yet really tested performance, but I can tell you that it is just as nippy and responsive as you would expect for a phone with 2GB RAM. The display is much more responsive than the C2 also and I haven’t had any ‘ghost touches’.

zopo zp990 captain s antutu

I was able to install Antutu just after recording the video and run it. A benchmark score of 14,642 isn’t bad at all, but we have seen better.

Zopo ZP990 Captain S unboxing and hand on video

Zopo ZP990 Captain S full review coming soon

That’s all for this brief hand on and unboxing. The new Zopo phablet will be passed around the office over the next week or so while I finish the Neo N003 review, so you can expect the full Zopo ZP990 Captain S review in the coming weeks.

Gorilla Glass get’s scratched too you know. Just not as easily as normal glass. Saying that you don’t need a screen protector on gorilla glass is like saying that you don’t need to put a leash on your pet dog. Of course it’s tame, but things can still happen.

Only against beach sand, what’s the point of getting phone with gorilla glass if you end up using screen protector on it?

            • August 28, 2013

True that, but I seriously sometimes doubt the claims companies like Zopo make about Gorilla Glass.

To protect the screen? Why would you NOT put a screen protector on a phone if they’ve already gave you one for free? Even if it has Gorilla Glass, it’s just stupid to say that it won’t and will never scratch. Think about how silly it is if you unboxed you’re new gorilla glass equipped phone, take out the screen protectors and toss them into the trash? Think about how infinitely sillier it would be if you eventually did scratch your phone on beach sand because you refused to use a screen protector. Since when had extra protection been a bad thing? Just my long 2cents though. Not intended to make anyone angry. 🙂

Have you tried taking pictures in low light situations or at night? If so, did you get good results? I have an android phone and it’s picture quality is poor in low light or at night.

I like it how they made the backlight a bit better, but I still find the styling too similar to an S4 :\

  6. August 27, 2013

How much the battery last at this big screen?

  7. August 27, 2013

For me, Chinese (Zopo, UMi, etc) smartphones make sense till the 5″ mark – bigger phones simply don’t offer the value for money you’d expect off one. It makes more sense to go for an international manufacturer like Huawei or Samsung when devices like the one in the video are concerned. The Ascend Mate is a great device too.

Hi. I’m also looking forward to this review being posted – is there any update on when you expect it to be ready? I need a new phone and, from your site, I’ve decided that either the Neo N003 or the Zopo ZP990 sound likely candidates so any comparison regarding quality of the hardware, especially the screen, would be helpful. They are about the same price for me and a larger screen would suit my use well, but does the Zopo cut any corners compared to the Neo which seems to be very highly regarded?

        Thanks!

I’ve using this phone for a week and I loved it! Yes there’s notification light. My only complain is the gps lockon is super slow without gps fix but that’s not what I’m using the phone for anyway. Screen is great and battery life is acceptable for moderate daily texting n Web surfing, lasted me 1 whole day till I get home n plug in to charge when I go to bed.
