More UMi Iron specifications revealed

umi iron

More teasers reveal more specs as we wait until next week for the official unveiling of the UMi Iron. Here is what we have learned about the new phone so far this week.

More teasers on the UMi Facebook page this week give us details of the audio and camera features of this new device. We had already learned that the UMi Iron will feature Android 5.1, an octacore Mediatek chipset and alloy body, now details of the camera and audio have come to light.

With some customers complaining about the audio quality of some Chinese phones, UMi have promised better performance for music lovers by adding DirectPath Audio to the phone. UMi have confirmed that a Texas Instruments audio processor will be used in the new phone for better sound cancellation, and offer “Excellent Low Frequency Fidelity”.

Gizchina News of the week

On the camera front, UMi will make use of the highly popular Sony IMX214 camera. This 13 mega-pixel shooter has been used on all manner of Android phones this year and when optimised correctly can produce stunning images. A front facing camera of 8 mega-pixels will receive a front facing LED flash, a features I find rather useful for those low-light selfies in the club!

The full unveiling of the UMi Iron will be held on the 23rd June where the phone will be officially released on the company’s Facebook page.

This phone sounds more promising with every ‘leak’, lets hope they get the audio right as it is an important feature for me. Any idea on screen size yet?

Bugger, just read that direct path audio is for the headphone socket only, loudspeaker will probably be crap then.

  3. June 16, 2015

6″ or 6″+ please UMI. Let this not be another 5.5 incher.

    • Ivan Rusanov
      June 16, 2015

Please no. It will be 5.5″, but I would have been glad to be 5″. And believe me, I have big hands (195cm tall). It’s just not possible to use with 1 hand comfortably. For those who want larger screen, please buy tablets…

      • balcobomber25
        June 16, 2015

Why do they have to buy tablets? Why can’t you buy a smaller phone? The market is varied enough that there enough choices no matter what screen size you prefer. This will probably be 5.5 though.

        • Ivan Rusanov
          June 16, 2015

No, there isn’t. Most of the interesting Chinese phones this year are all 5.5″. 5″ are considered mini and usually have lower specs. I can’t think of a single 5″ Chinese phone from this year that I like. I don’t think there are enough choices for smaller devices. I don’t even know how you guys are talking on these 6″ devices. It is so uncomfortable…

Finally, I would have to consider 5.5″ device, because there would be little to no choice, but 5″ is the perfect size for me.

One of the most compact 5.5″ Chinese phones is the LeTV, but there are other things I don’t like in it, including price and lack of SD card slot. Of course it has more powerful chipset installed.

Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean that haven’t been 5 inch devices released this year. Two of the most interesting phones this year are both 5 inches, the Xiaomi Mi4i and Lenovo Vibe Shot (coud be best camera phone this year). There is a lot more than those to as well. You may not personally like the choices but there are plenty of them available.

Personally I don’t use 6 inch phones I use a Xiaomi Mi4 which is also 5 inches and an iOcean X8 which is 5.7 inches. The X8 feels very natural in the hand, I have no issues with it whatsoever. I used to think there was no way I could use a phone that big, until I tried. Just like you question how they can use a phone so big, they question how you can use one so small. There is no right answer we all have different views.

              June 16, 2015

Of course it is up to the person and his personal preference. It is good if there’s a variety of products for every taste.

However, noone can convince me a phone this big can be comfortable for one-hand operation :p I just want something with similar specs, but 5″, in this price category.

I think like everyone else, I also have “the right” to express my desires. It is no different than the “Please make 6″ or 6+” above” πŸ™‚

The comment about the tablets might have been a little harsh, but it looks ridiculous to me when I see someone holding that thing next to his head :).

PS: Btw, if this has on-screen buttons, then I don’t have anything against UMI making it whatever size you guys want, since it won’t be interesting to me anymore πŸ˜€

              June 16, 2015

Have to disagree with you, there are lots of 5″ phones being released, there are no 6″ phones at all. Some of us dont spend the day with a phone glued to our ear and use our phones for everything but talking!

            • balcobomber25
              June 16, 2015

You have a right to say you don’t like it just like they have a right to say they do like it. It’s called opinions. It looks ridiculous to me when I see people try to watch videos on a tiny 4 inch screen but some people prefer that. Personally for me the best phone size is 5-5.5 inches.

              June 16, 2015

I only use it as a work phone and even then that might only be a 2-3 hours a day. Outside of that I am always using my Mi4 for everything. But as a second phone I haven’t noticed any issues at all, it does everything I need it to. The build quality is good, the camera is good, the display is good, the ROM is good, the battery life is good. For the $180 I paid for it, it has been an excellent phone.

            • Simon
              June 17, 2015

              June 17, 2015

It’s been about 8-9 months now, I originally had a Nubia Z7 that was given to me by a client of mine, it was a pre-production unit of the 2k display model. I liked it except the ROM was horrible and the display killed the battery. So after a month I sold it and bought a Mi4 which I believe was mid August or earl September.

It could very well be that SoC but until it’s confirmed by a reputable source I wouldn’t trust a reseller for that info. They often get specs wrong before they are announced and sometimes they still get them wrong even after it is announced.

DirectPath is TI’s trademark for headphone amplifier technology built into their audio codecs, so UMI is talking about only one chip. Interesting choice since TI codec + mobile phone isn’t something you’d think of first when “hi-fi” enters the discussion. TI owns the Burr Brown name and their stable of op-amps and DACs, but that’s not what’s on offer here. The Meizu M9 used a TI codec (the only time they tried one) and audio performance was so-so. Also odd since MediaTek has made such monstrous strides with their built-in audio solution sourced from Wolfson/Cirrus.
