UMi Iron confirmed to get 5.5-inch FHD display

umi iron teasers

UMi have updated their Facebook today with another teaser letting us know the resolution of the UMi Iron’s display, plus they are also offering a chance to win the phone too.

UMi’s campaign of teasers has continued this morning with details emerging on Facebook that the Iron will have a 5.5-inch FHD display. As you may notice in the image posted on Facebook (and below) the resolution reads 1980 x 1080, but we believe this is a typo. Image now corrected and updated.

It is claimed that the display on the UMi Iron is am LTPS unit and will “provides faster speed, higher resolution and brighter light on the screen compared with other regular LCD display” according to an email sent to press this morning.

Also in the email were a few details about a UMi Iron giveaway which will start in just 5 days and run from 23rd-29th June. 29th June is also when the presales for the phone will go live.

In earlier leaks UMi confirmed the Iron to have 3GB RAM, high quality build, Android 5.1, Hi-Fi Audio and 3350mAh battery. Keep posted for more news.

I didn’t find any new teasers and info about, how to win Umi Iron, on Umi’s facebook page. Andi, may be it is available for few countries only?

    • June 18, 2015

Looks like they removed the teaser about the screen due to the typo. The giveaway info will be published on the 23rd I guess

Do you want a 10,000mAh battery for a 5.5 inch phone?

It’s shaping up to be a nice phone. Hopefully UMI learned from the mistakes they made with the Zero.

i kinda like the weird retro look for the back and at 170-180$ sounds pretty good. Do wish they didn’t had the black bands around the screen, guess we’ll get there too at some point.

can someone explain why those DARN black bands even exist ?!

      • Mrinal
        June 18, 2015

they’re probably just trying to make the bezels look thinner than they are capable of making. If the screen is off the bezels of phones with those bands look quite thin. Only when the screen is on do you see the real thickness. I’m not really against it though, even with screen on the black bands make the total bezel ‘seem’ smaller. It has to be done right though, LeTV does it quite okay for example.

          hmm… nicely said.
but i believe something should be done about them…. i think a bit thicker bezels are endurable in comparison to black bands taking up all that screen space…

          • June 18, 2015

            I second that Muhammad

            June 18, 2015

Or just make the phone black. This way the black bands will sort of blend and won’t be so distracting. At least I think so. Actual bezels, no matter how thick they are, also works for me and have nothing against it.

naw… kingzone tried that with the z1 and were BASHED like hell…
believe me , thats a suicidal move

Well, black Mlais M7 looks better than the white one, but I haven’t seen it live, so don’t really know. I guess it needs to be pure black though… Still, most people would prefer real bezels like in Jiayu S3, including me.

I like the screws also IMX214, I hope they’ll also have a flash sale. Also hopefully the shipper does not send it via Sweden Post like my eMax. Shenzen to Philippines is 1100km, the shipper sent it via Sweden Post, so it went to Sweden first (8000km) then probably will get lost at the sorting then travel back 9400km to the Philippines.

      June 18, 2015

I actually like it when they use Sweden post or Netherlands post as I’ve never had to pay customs with either of them and delivery is very fast (usually within 4 days of it being sent).

      • June 18, 2015

Hey Rob, we miss our chance of a 6″+ device n this one 🙁

        • Rob
          June 18, 2015

Exactly, what happened with the mt6795 and 2k panel? The resolution is what made me think it would be around 6″. This is yet another run of the mill 5.5″ phone. I might have to get the gionee e7 since they are almost giving them away now and get a phone i really want after xmas when the helio x20 phones start making an appearance. Cant go much longer without a phone.

            June 18, 2015

Then go for it. I’ve also ordered the E7 but it didn’t arrive yet.

              June 18, 2015

I’ve already got one ordered for my mum, it should be delivered tomorrow. Will have a play with it and if i like it i will order myself one whilst the exchange rate is good.

        June 18, 2015

Probably depends on the location, I bought some goods from Aliexpress on the same day, one of the shipper sent by China mail, and I’ve already received the goods almost 10 days ago, while the Sweden Post is still stuck somewhere.

Probablh they didn’t know where the Philippines is, maybe they thought it’s in europe.

Also I’m kinda disappointed that this sells almost the same as the eMax yet it gets IMX214.

Sweden Post is really slow sometimes but as Rob said you could use to not pay customs in the EU … doesn’t really work in Romania anymore.

Netherlands Post is the best to get something in the EU ( aside from DHL and other couriers )

China Post is really decent these days and things get here in Romania in about 2-3 weeks, not more 4 weeks+

        June 18, 2015

I like Singapore Post the best, I have always had incredibly fast service and never have to pay customs. DHL is my favorite overall but sometimes they cost too much.

        • Rob
          June 18, 2015

Ive ben hit with customs using Singspore post and all 3 times using DHL, the UK customs make up their own prices that never has anything to do with the declared value.

Sup Bob,went for the zeaplus m7 this afternoon with the flash sale, bought it just to calm the itching, if something better in similar price range comes along, don’t forget to blow the whistle.
PD :still waiting for the master all metal device sub 250€, maybe this is the one…

As usual you need a facebook acount and thats something i won’t do, even for a slightly discounted phone. Can get the e7 for this price with superior camera.

I was so looking forward to this phone but these latest ‘teasers’ have killed any interest I had unfortunately. Hopefully something suitable and affordable will come along soon.

    • June 18, 2015

      Yea me too 🙁

    • balcobomber25
      June 18, 2015

Did you lose interest because of the teasers or because it wont be 6 inches lol?

      • Rob
        June 18, 2015

Both! The mt6752 is better than the 6753 as this one is slower. Cant see any benefit over any of the 100’s of 5.5″ phones that have been released recently, the initial teasers sounded so promising but as usual the end poduct fails to quite deliver.

This looks more like attack of the clones each day, everyone out there is making MT6572 phones with 5.5 inch screens , at least one model is a must it seems.

I have to wonder though what makes them think 5.5 inch screens is what so many people actually want.

    • balcobomber25
      June 18, 2015

Because all those other “clones” that are 5.5 inches are selling like crazy.

      • Marius Cirsta
        June 18, 2015

Maybe but it’s not like people really have options … I don’t have the figures for it but I just hate me too products

        • realjjj
          June 18, 2015

This is one of the most original designs this year so the term clone is inappropriate.
As for size , the industry does look at demand, from display makers to phone makers and even some app makers. It’s fundamental for them to offer what people want.
Here for example a study that’s 1 year old http://newsroom.accenture.com/news/phablets-generating-strong-consumer-buying-interest-worldwide-accenture-survey-finds.htm
“The survey also revealed that consumer preferences for phablets are
stronger in emerging countries than developed countries. Of the
consumers planning to buy a smartphone, 67 percent in India, 66 percent in China and 65 percent in South Africa said they would prefer to buy a phablet device. Consumers in developed countries, by contrast, were less partial to buying phablets. In the United States, for example, 40 percent indicated a preference to buy a phablet. Similarly, nearly a third (30 percent) of German respondents and only 19 percent of Japan’s participants prefer a phablet.”

Now there are a few things to factor in. This was before the iphone went bigger and there is a correlation between proportion of 4inch iphone owners and the results in each market.
Then, in developed markets almost everybody buys a smartphone, even many that mostly use it for voice as opposed to poorer parts of the world where buying a smartphone is more of an effort and people buy for web access, in many places it is the only computing device the person owns.

Maybe another factor is that people that own small screen smartphones, because they can’t afford more, are more inclined to claim that they don’t need a bigger screen.
Another fact not to be ignored is that most off contract phones are not aimed at markets dominated by carriers where pricing is less relevant.

In China now for example the average size is 5 inch but the average is dragged down by very cheap devices that go small screen to reach a very low price. For a midranger or upper midrange device there is less pressure to save a few $ by going smaller so the industry can go for the sizes there is demand for.
It is true that there are maybe too few 5 inch 1080p China phones now and 6 inch and above cost too much but that should get better as 5.5 inch stays the norm but folks also try to cover bellow and above.

            June 18, 2015

That was a well written post but I for one still feel this is “attack of the clones” let’s put a 5.5 screen and an MTK6572 and then we’ll see …

Phone that I consider original are the Yota Phone ( with the nice e-ink ) or the Nubia Z9 ( with the borderless features, the 5.2 screen while still being less than 70 mm wide ).

One thing I also miss are the good old day when you had flip phone and all kinds of interesting designs … now it’s all just a touchscreen mounted on a thinner and thinner frame.

            • realjjj
              June 18, 2015

Will get foldable screens and then stretchable in the next years so there will be a lot more form/design options. Plus, a shift to glasses will complicate things further.

            • Marius Cirsta
              June 18, 2015

Certainly hope so, I’m a bit tired of seeing slabs all day … There was a lot more diversity back in the day.

        • balcobomber25
          June 19, 2015

There’s plenty of options. There have been phones released this year that are 4.7, 5, 5.7 and 6 inches. The majority have been 5.5 but there are still options at other sizes.

      • Rob
        June 18, 2015

Thats because its really really hard finding anything that isn’t 5.5″! There really isn’t anything to distinguish these phones apart other than what ‘brand’ you prefer.

        • balcobomber25
          June 19, 2015

Brand and design. Some of them are just ugly, others look good.
