Xiaomi Mi5S and Mi Note 2 rumoured with Snapdragon 821, 8GB RAM and dual cameras

All bets are on which smartphone maker will be the first to use the Snapdragon 821, and according to new reports it will be Xiaomi with a double whammy.

This mornings news is dominated by reports that Xaomi are planning to use the latest Snapdragon 821 chipset in their Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and a slightly upgraded Mi5 known as the Mi5S.

What’s more interesting is that the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and Mi5S are rumoured to share more than just the same chipset but also a pressure sensitive display (ala Huawei, ZTE, Meizu and Apple).

In fact the spec sheets continue with reports also mentioning the use of Qualcomms Ultrasonic fingerprint technology, as much as 8GB RAM, dual cameras, HIFI audio and fast charging.

Gizchina News of the week

Dual cameras are set to make an appearance too, well at least on the Mi Note 2, but only on the more expensive models. 3 variants of Mi Note 2 are believed to be coming to the market, a basic with single camera and two other versions with dual cameras.

The Mi Note 2 is also thought to be the first Xiaomi phone to get a 3D curved display, so it is going to be quite the spec sheet monster should these details prove to be accurate.

Of course these are just rumours and we need to take the details with a pinch of salt, but these are also quite detailed reports and sound a little more plausible than some of the more pie in the sky rumours we see in Chinese tech sites.

Wonder if the Mi5s will also snap like a feeble twig when you bend it

    • Bailey
      June 23, 2016

That test is just silly who goes around doing that?

      • Sere83
        June 23, 2016

Not really though, accidents can happen and such a brittle easily bendable body is not acceptable on a premium smartphone. Hence why apple fixed its bend issues on the S models and why companies like HTC and Samsung also reinforce the chassis’ of their devices. Its a simple matter of providing good build quality.

        • balcobomber25
          June 23, 2016

Accidents can happen but a phone isn’t going to bend unless you purposely try to make it bend. And under enough pressure a lot of phones today can and will snap like a twig. You would be surprised just how many “premium” phones will easily break in two if you know exactly where the weak spots are.

          • Sere83
            June 23, 2016

From the Youtube account doing the testing the S7,iphone 6s, HTC 10, LG G5 and almost all flagships from this year past the test and none of them crumbled in the epic fashion the Mi5 did. Its clear xiaomi cut corners on the chassis.

            • balcobomber25
              June 23, 2016

Takes some force but the S7 will bend under the right conditions. Again bending is something that will almost never happen under normal usage unless you try to bend it.

Almost every phone can be bent if you try hard enough. Not every phone can be bent as easily as Mi5 is.

You can try to talk this out but the evidence is out there. Good luck.

            • balcobomber25
              June 23, 2016

I am not arguing that. I am arguing that a phone won’t bend unless you try to bend it so it is a worthless test.

that looks to have suffered less force than what my phone usually went through in a bad night in bed lol (and no, I’m not over the ideal BMI).

            • balcobomber25
              June 23, 2016

Again though unless your trying to bend something it wont bend. I can snap in pencil in two but that’s not how your normally use a pencil. No one has a bigger opponent of the Mi5 than me but it’s a worthless test.

            • Sere83
              June 23, 2016

Not really, i think when a phone bends this easily it is at risk of bending under random accidental pressure in day to day use.

            • balcobomber25
              June 23, 2016

There’s no random accidental bending with normal usage. It only bends when you try to bend it.

            • Sere83
              June 23, 2016

lol, completely different league to the mi5 which snaps laughably easily, he’d already beat the crap out of these phones before bending and even then they didnt snap easily

          June 23, 2016

I am using the mi5 as my daily driver I have a thin clear TPU case on it. I don’t find it flimsy at all. But am going to bend it in half no and why would I want to? Have I sat on by mistake whilst in my back pocket yes. Have dropped it yet no but I don’t regularly drop my phones I tend to look after them very well. You can bend the iPhone 6 at the time that was nearly a £700 phone this phone is only £260

        • Alex
          June 23, 2016

I wouldn’t worry if it will bend or break. I’ve sat on my phone many times. Stepped on it too. Even if I karate chop my phone it still won’t break. Actually I might be interested in seeing a video of someone breaking their phone in half using martial arts.

can’t wait for next year. this year’s flagship has been about dual cameras. then next year, many cheap phones will start to use dual cameras too (hopefully)

    • Rob
      June 23, 2016

I wouldn’t count on it, this is 1st gen tech and more likely next years flaships will be better optimised to really make use of it as none of the phones using it this year beat a good single sensor phone so there is still some way to go.

    • balcobomber25
      June 23, 2016

I agree with Rob we are still in the infancy of this technology. The Honor V8 is the closest you will get to a cheap phone with dual cameras.

        • balcobomber25
          June 23, 2016

It’s in that same price range as the V8. I didn’t mean the V8 would be the only cheaper phone with it, I meant for phones at that price point is the cheapest you will find it. Basically the upper mid range that will cost around $250-300 at launch.

              June 24, 2016

Personally I feel overall it should have been better since it is dual camera and also the price. Taking photos indoor there seems to be alot of noise in the pictures and not very sharp. Also not very good at low light. But the bokeh effects is very nice. And also day time pictures are good. If the price drops to around the same as Redmi note 3 pro, then I think might consider.

How concentrating on software optimization as well instead of 8 GB of rom

      • balcobomber25
        June 23, 2016

Software optimization I don’t have an issue with as I know Xiaomi will eventually get everything ironed out. Every Mi phone had optimization issues at launch and all of them were fixed in numerous OTA’s.

        • Simon
          June 23, 2016

How many OTAs did it take generally. I think 4GB of rom is plenty enough.

MIUI 8 does look very nice though.

      June 24, 2016

Yeah, I’d rather see support for band 20 than another 5GB of RAM I will never use. My Honor 7 has 3GB of RAM and I always have 1,2GB free. 8GB is completely overkill and it will still be in 2-3 years from now.

  8. Assefa Hanson
    June 23, 2016

wow i thought at least this year would be 6gb ram year… and already 8gbram even 6gb looks small/insignificant already

    • balcobomber25
      June 24, 2016

We will be at 32GB RAM by this time next year. What exactly you will use it for is anyone’s guess. My current 3GB phone always has at least 1GB free.

  9. Guaire
    June 23, 2016

I would get a phone with a large battery, faster storage, 64GB storage on base model, metal body, large sensors with wide apertures and OIS on both camera over a phone with curved screen, Force Touch, Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, 6/8GB RAM and dual camera.

If the SD800/801 is any indication the SD821 will be barely an upgrade over SD820.

  10. Ionut Johnny
    June 23, 2016

I am waiting for Mi note 2 with dual camera or the newest camera on the market, edge display, big battery, size, 2 k resolution, amoled display, 8 gb ram :-)) overkill, snapdragon and cheap price 300-350 £ at most. What do you think this will become reality? If not I’m going for asus 3 deluxe.

    • balcobomber25
      June 24, 2016

If I had to guess on a Mi Note 2 I would say:

5.7” LCD (I won’t believe Xiaomi is using an AMOLED till I see it)
      SD820
      4-6GB RAM
      4000mAh
      2699 yuan (about $400).

      • Ionut Johnny
        June 24, 2016

I see more and more Smartphones go with the Amoled in the last months.
Axon, Oneplus, Iphone (from what I read) , Asus.

        • balcobomber25
          June 25, 2016

Yes they are but Xiaomi has continued to use IPS LCD including in the Redmi 3, Redmi 3 Pro, Redmi Note 3, Mi5 and Mi Max. Hugo has said in the past they prefer LCD, so until it actually launched I won’t believe they are using AMOLED.

          • Ionut Johnny

              900MHz & 2100MHz I think.

  11. Alex
    June 23, 2016

what’s going on with the RAM. 4gb for Android I get, but 6, 8, what’s next 10? Does Android really need that much? I’d be more interested if it could boot in a few seconds. I was going to buy a phone a few months ago, but seeing new specs keeps making me wait. If the Asus Zenfone 3 deluxe has a camera as good or almost as good as S7 then that’s probably the one I might get. The camera on Xiaomi haven’t been their priority I guess.

    • Stef
      June 24, 2016

      Short answer: caching.

Long answer: Unlike Windows it doesn’t matter what the OS needs. So it’s irrelevant whether Android wants/needs that much Ram.

What’s relevant is that 90% of the waiting time you experience on phones are due to loading within and between apps. Caching eliminates that, bringing instant computing. That’s the point of extra ram.

      • Mujahid Abbas
        June 25, 2016

RAM management also takes a toll on battery life of phone…

        • Stef
          June 25, 2016

Not by much though. My Note tablet has much better ram management these days (more cached apps) than a year ago, but also better standby battery. It’s possible with system like doze et al to put wake lockers and similar to sleep.
