One of the biggest IM clients ever, WhatsApp might just be working on a peer to peer payments service.
WhatsApp is the preferred mode of communication in a host of nations, especially emerging ones. India is WhatsApp’s biggest market, and the app might soon turn into a payments service.
Late last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation opened the floodgates for digital payment methods. One app that benefitted the most from the move was Vijay Shekhar’s Paytm, which is now moving millions of Rupees per day.
WhatsApp could certainly benefit from a payments service module. Given the Facebook roots it has, it might not be too far from reality as well. Facebook rolled out payments services in Messenger for the US back in 2015.
The next few months should be interesting for WhatsApp users — I happen to be one of the many.
