Aside from announcing the Mediapad M5 tablets, Huawei at its 2018 MWC event unveiled a new MacBook pro challenger and successor to last year’s Matebook X laptop.

Dubbed Huawei MateBook X pro, the new laptop is essentially a larger, more powerful MateBook X with a better display and impressive audio tech, but marked with a bizarre feature that has generated some mixed reactions. For privacy reasons, the Camera on the MateBook X pro has been relocated from above the display, and now embedded in a button right between the F7 and F7 function keys.

A tap on the camera button brings up the 1MP camera with an indicator light next to it while pushing it down again deactivates and takes the camera off sight.

The new MateBook is now more attractive and crams thinner bezels around the display —  having a 91 percent screen-to-body ratio, according to the maker. The MateBook flaunts a near bezel-free display having a 13.9 inches touchscreen with a 3000 x 2000 resolution for a Surface-style 3:2 aspect ratio.

Still, on the design aspect, the Huawei MateBook X pro has its power button located to the right, which surprisingly doubles as a fingerprint scanner, which Huawei says will start and securely log into Windows from cold in under eight seconds. The laptop comes with four Dolby’s Atmos sound system supported speakers – two rear treble speakers and two bass speakers at the front.

Inside the new MateBook X Pro is the latest Intel 8th generation quad-core i7 U series processor with up to 16GB of RAM and a Nvidia MX150 discrete graphics processor with 2GB of memory.

Huawei says the MateBook X pro battery life has been considerably improved on,  the MateBook X Pro is expected to offer up to 12 hours of video playback and comes with fast charging technology that can offer 6 hours of battery life after a 30 minutes charge via the included compact 65W USB-C charger.
