American chipmaker, Qualcomm, is one of the leading chip manufacturers in the world. A few days ago, the company released two mid-range processors, Snapdragon 665 and 730 and it also announced its new AI chip – Qualcomm Cloud AI 100. Now, there are salient information on its upcoming flagship SoC. With the launch of the Snapdragon 855 SoC, Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship platform has hit the rumor mill.

Today, Roland Quandt, a well-known leakster revealed that Qualcomm’s next-generation flagship platform which is internally called SM8250 will support LPDDR5 memory (Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 supports LPDDR4X memory). Although Qualcomm has not announced the final naming of SM8250, the current nomenclature is consistent with the recent past. Following Qualcomm’s pattern, SM8250 should be named Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 internal name is SM8150). The codename for this chip is “kona”.
Roland Quandt said that Qualcomm already has a prototype equipped with LPDDR5 memory + Snapdragon 865 flagship platform, which is currently undergoing testing. Unfortunately, the clock frequency and other details of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 flagship platform are still unclear.
In addition, the tweet also suggests that Qualcomm also may have an unreleased 5G modem SDM55, code-named “Huracan”. It may support the 5G network by plug-in like the X50. Another possibility is that the Snapdragon 865 integrates the SDM55 5G modem to support the 5G network. In all, there is a disclaimer that the information contains some “professional” guesswork. As of now, it has not been officially verified.
In accordance with established practice, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 flagship platform is expected to be launched at the end of 2019. The smartphones to use this chip will start dropping from the first quarter of 2020.
