Samsung ISOCELL HM3 sensor detailed in new video

Samsung has announced its ISOCELL HM3 – a 1/1.33-inch sensor with 108MP resolution earlier this year. We saw this sensor in action with the release of the company’s king of flagships the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Since then, we have been waiting for more details about this camera inside the beast and now the Korean firm has decided to share some tidbits about it. Samsung has published a new official video which hints the sensor might soon make its way to other flagship offerings from Samsung or and flagships smartphones from other smartphone makers.

We’re in June and the Galaxy Note series does not seem to be coming this year. Samsung is skipping its phablet lineup for a series of reasons, among them, the chips shortage. So we can’t really expect the ISOCELL HM3 to come on a Galaxy Note 21 Ultra. We assume that the next possible candidate is the Galaxy Z Fold3 which is certainly coming in the next months.

The latest 108MP camera brings 9-to-1 pixel binning with an effective pixel size of 2.4um. The sensor captures 12-bit images with 12 MP resolution in default and features Smart ISO Pro that upscales HDR content by capturing simultaneous low and high ISO shots to balance out ghosting on moving objects. Video capture offers up to 8K video recording while the slow-motion videos will go up to 240 frames per second at the Full HD resolution.

Samsung ISOCELL HM3 sensor will be present in more flagships this year

For now, we can’t really determine which is the next Galaxy flagship coming with this Samsung ISOCELL HM3 sensor. However, we wouldn’t be surprised to see other OEMs adopting the company’s solution. Xiaomi and Realme are already two users of Samsung 108MP cameras. Since Xiaomi already unveiled its new flagships, we may see a future Realme smartphone rocking a 108MP camera sensor. Of course, we can’t discard the other OEMs as possible users of this new technology.

A couple of months back, a report emerged stating that Samsung is done with the race for megapixels. Now, the company will stick with the quality offered and the technologies behind its sensor. Of course, we can still expect some sensors in the future with 108MP and even 200MP of resolution. Despite that, the company may focus on other technologies such as improving auto-focus, zoom capabilities to prevent another fiasco like that of the Galaxy S20 series.
