Samsung Exynos 2200 prospects: CPU performance is limited

As MediaTek and Qualcomm have successively released their own 4nm process chips: Dimensity 9000 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Samsung will also bring its first 4nm process chip “Exynos 2200”. However, there are reports that the performance of the Exynos 2200 is far below expectation. At the beginning of last year, Samsung announced that it would cooperate with AMD to jointly develop a new generation flagship chip, Exynos 2200. The most important core is to integrate AMD’s RDNA2GPU IP into Exynos 2200 to fill Samsung’s deficiencies in GPU.

Samsung Exynos 2200

On December 21st, Samsung Exynos officially released an animated short film on Weibo. There was a very conspicuous number of “2200” in the short film. Many netizens speculate that Samsung Exynos 2200 would be released soon. However, according to recent reports, the performance of Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chip is not much different from the previous generation. Relative to the Samsung Exynos 2100, the CPU of the Exynos 2200 increases by about 5%. As for the GPU, it has a 17% increase.

This is quite surprising because the CPU increase between Samsung Exynos 990 and Samsung Exynos 2100 is 30%. For their GPU, the performance increase is 40%. In contrast, the improvement of Samsung Exynos 2200 is quite small. The only real improvement is that the NPU has increased by 117%, and the AI performance has also improved a lot.

Gizchina News of the week

With the release of MediaTek and Qualcomm Snapdragon’s new generation of flagship chips, Samsung Exynos 2200 will not be a true flagship chip. Furthermore, there are reports that Samsung will increase its orders for Snapdragon processors. This means that there will be more SNapdragon 8 Gen1 on the Galaxy S22 series. The use of the Exynos 2200 on the Galaxy S22 series will be questionable.

Exynos 2200 alleged specifications

The company does not tease the specs of its platform like its Chinese competitors. So, for now, we’ll need to rely on rumors about its upcoming products. According to these rumors, the Exynos 2200 will be made on the 4 nm FiNFET process technology. One of the highlights of this chipset will be an RDNA-based Radeon Mobile GPU co-developed with AMD. This GPU is allegedly capable of HDR gaming, ray-tracing, and Variable Rate Shading. These features are currently available only on consoles and PC right now. The SOC may also feature 1 x ARM Cortex-X2 CPU core, 3 x ARM Cortex-A710 CPU cores, and 4 x ARM Cortex-A510 CPU cores.

The processor is also rumored to come with a fully-integrated 5G modem, Wi-Fi 6E. Furthermore, it has dual-frequency GPS, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and Ultra-Wideband support. Like other high-end chipsets, the Exynos 2200 may feature an integrated NPU, ISP with at least 200 MP camera sensor support, and 4 K 120 fps and 80 K 30 fps video recording support.

The new flagship SoC may make its first appearance through the release of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series. There will be three flagships – Samsung Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra. All of them will get Exynos-powered versions, depending on the region. Some units will have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 instead which bears similar specs.
