Xiaomi India under fire from ED

Xiaomi India has dropped to the number two spot in the country in terms of market share of March 2022. Samsung is now the market leader. Notably, Xiaomi has been at the forefront of the smartphone segment in India for several years. The company sells value-for-money smartphones in India. Xiaomi’s strategy is to offer handsets at affordable prices in India. Now, this master plan has been doing wonders for the company. As a result, Xiaomi has been leading India’s market share for a long time.

Xiaomi has retained the coveted No. 1 brand title in India for several years. It acquired over 15 percent of the market share. The brand has been leading the Indian smartphone industry since 2017. Samsung surpassed Xiaomi in Q3 of 2020. However, Samsung couldn’t retain the No. 1 position in 2021. Last year, Xiaomi regained its lead. A new market survey by Counterpoint Research shows a surprising result. Samsung surpassed Xiaomi in market share for the month of March.

Now, Counterpoint Research has released its Indian smartphone shipment report for March 2022. Xiaomi’s market share in India was 22 percent. However, its rival Samsung managed to maintain an impressive market share of 27 percent in the country. It is worth mentioning here that the report focuses only on the month of March. So, Xiaomi dropped to second place specifically in March 2022. The quarterly report shows that Xiaomi is still the No. 1 smartphone in India. However, this monthly report is a major sign that Xiaomi needs to fix its flaws. If the intention for buying Xioami phones continues to decline at this rate, users are likely to shift to other brands.

Moreover, if Xiaomi’s market share continues to drop significantly, other brands could dethrone it to become a new market leader. So, Xiaomi India needs to figure out its flaws, and fix them as soon as possible to avoid a further decline in its market share. To make things worse, Xiaomi India has come under fire from the Enforcement Directorate. The department has accused the company of violating its foreign exchange policy. ED was on the verge of seizing INR 5,551 crores worth of assets. However, the Karnataka High Court put a hold on this seizure.
