OnePlus 10T: The brand explains why the alert slider is gone

OnePlus 10T

OnePlus already confirmed it is bringing the new flagship OnePlus 10T on August 3. By the time of the release, there are not many surprises left for customers. After all, most of the phone’s specifications have been leaking in the wild. Some of the leaked details say that the phone will miss the alert slider. That’s a tendency that started with the OnePlus 10R. Some users won’t matter, but more traditional OnePlus fans know that the company is leaving some legacy features behind. The company talked to The Verge about the missing alert slider and revealed some official images. Apparently, OnePlus isn’t minding if everyone sees the phone before the launch.

The cheaper OnePlus Nord phones don’t have an alert slider. However, this year the company removed it from a numbered series phone, the OnePlus 10R. Now, the OnePlus 10T will be the first global flagship to drop the alert slider. The company believes that this decision will cause some buzz. As a result, it’s explaining its reasons before the launch.

The alert slider is gone to preserve space

OnePlus is pretty much the only Android OEM using this feature that has been a tradition on iPhones. Some fans will clearly miss out on his feature. According to OnePlus’ chief designer Hope Liu, the slider had to go in order for the 10T to have enough internal space for other components. This sounds like the excuse for dropping the headphone jack. The designer says the extra space is necessary for the high wattage charging, large battery, and better antenna signal.

Worth noting that the OnePlus 10T will bring 150 W charging which is faster than the OnePlus 10 Pro. The phone needs two charging pumps instead of one. Furthermore, there is a new 15-antenna system in the upcoming model. It will improve the signal when holding the phone horizontally. Going back to the battery, the phone is rumored to bring a 4,800 mAh battery which is bigger than the majority of phones having 100W+ charging.

The alert slider takes up 30 square mm of motherboard according to Liu. Therefore, to bring the slider the designers would need to stack the motherboard. That would make the phone thicker, and possibly more expensive. Therefore, the company has just removed the alert slider to avoid problems. Besides the alert slider, the company is also dropping the Hasselblad partnership. The phone will not bring Hasselblad tweaks. It may still come on more flagship OnePlus phones, but the OnePlus 10T clearly stands as a “performance flagship”. So the company won’t pay for the presumably-expensive Hasselblad tweaks and name.

The executive, however, states that the phone has a 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor and HDR photography. Furthermore, he confirms the 6.7-inch display. As per the leaks, the phone has an AMOLED panel with an in-display fingerprint scanner. The panel refreshes at a 120 Hz refresh rate. Some camera samples have been revealed.

OnePlus 10T

The OnePlus 10T brings the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with up to 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Moving around to the rear, the device also brings an 8 MP ultrawide shooter and a 2 MP sensor. Furthermore, the phone has a 16 MP shooter, and a 4,800 mAh battery with 150 W charging. The phone will run Android 12 straight out of the box with OxygenOS 12.1 on top. During the event, the company will also reveal OxygenOS 13.

The real reason is probably the merger with Oppo. Oneplus wants to save costs and will therefore only use the Oppo kit and no longer produce expensive in-house developments.
