Amazing: You can actually play text-based Pokemon Emerald with ChatGPT-4

Pokemon Emerald

OpenAI took the tech world by storm with the launch of its AI-driven chatbot ChatGPT. The company made multiple partnerships and got huge investments from Microsoft. Most of companies want a piece of this technology, while others are trying to develop their alternatives to catch up in this promising market. Despite the rising concerns involving AI, the next level of OpenAI’s expertise is already here thanks to the new ChatGPT-4 standard. It’s even more powerful than the GPT-3 standard and keeps “scaring” users across the web with its expertise. Apparently, with the latest standard you can even simulate a text-based campaign of Pokemon Emerald!

ChatGPT-4 can simulate an interactive-text version of Pokemon Emerald

To those unaware, Pokemon Emerald is one of the classic games launched for the Game Boy Advanced. It follows the turn-based, Pokemon-catching formula that made a lot of success. Obviously, ChatGPT-4 will not run a full-fledged version of the game on your screen. But it seems to be capable of converting the game’s narrative into a text-based form. Think about it like playing a D&D campaign where there are texts and options to determine your path.

A Twitter user Dangond asked the GPT-4 to simulate Pokemon Emerald via a Command-line Interface. The AI language model started working and brought an interactive-text version of the game. Curiously, GPT-4 skips the iconic van scene and the clock setting and starts directly from the Professor Birch scene. The GPT-4 asks the player which Pokemon they would like. Shortly after picking your Pokemon, a fight against a wild Poochyena starts. It’s exactly like the game, but you also request some tips for ChatGPT-4. Using the moves is pretty simple, and all you need to do is press a button.

The text simulates this part of the game in perfect form.

As per Dangong, it is like asking a friend to pretend to be the game for you. Or perhaps, it’s like having an RPG Master narrating the campaign. We are used to asking questions and more to ChatGPT, but it’s impressive that ChatGPT-4 even knows about the game.

After picking the started Pokemon, the player starts their journey. GPT-4 can skip wild Pokemon battles, and trainer battles. It will completely follow the game’s storyline. For instance, it’s not possible to access Route 110 at the beginning of the game. ChatGPT-4 is aware of this fact and also makes the path inaccessible. Obviously, the goal of GPT-4 is not to simulate text-based games. But still, this is a neat example of how powerful this platform is, and how it can be more impressive with further development.

The GPT-4 definitively ticks one more box in its range of capabilities. Apparently, simulating games does not seem to be a big challenge for the AI model. Just imagine what it can do in a few years.

Many authorities are concerned with ChatGPT-4 and this AI race

In the past week, multiple names in the tech segment raised alarms about the future of AI. Elon Musk, Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak, and many others have signed a letter that tries to ask for a “halt” in the development of AI.

The letter titled “Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter” was posted on the website of the Future of Life (FLI) Institute. It says, “We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than ChatGPT-4”.

The letter points out that AI systems now have human-competitive intelligence. The authors believe this “could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with commensurate care and resources.” They claim that this level of planning and management is not happening, even as an “out-of-control race” has been on to develop new “digital minds” that not even their creators can understand or predict.
