South Korea will use drones and AI to monitor traffic conditions next year

Drones

The Seoul City Government in South Korea recently announced that it will use drones to monitor traffic conditions in real time starting in 2024. According to the Korea Herald, the city of Seoul will use traffic footage taken by drones 200 meters above the ground. It will also use AI algorithms for traffic monitoring by using it to analyze the drone footage. Furthermore, the AI algorithms will help to predict future traffic conditions. To create a traffic management system that utilizes drones and AI, the Seoul Metropolitan Government conducted several tests in September and October.

During the Seoul International Fireworks Festival held in October, drones flew over Yeouido in western Seoul to monitor crowds and roads near the venue. During Halloween, drones flew over the Seongsu-dong area in eastern Seoul and the Hongdae area in western Seoul to monitor crowd density. The drones also monitor traffic flow and road conditions where there are no surveillance cameras.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government hopes to be able to more quickly identify traffic issues. Its target is also to develop a quick response system to these traffic issues in the future. There are reports that the traffic management data reported by the drones was collected this fall by the Seoul Traffic Operations and Information Service, the city government’s traffic management centre. Starting next year, they will share the information with the Seoul Police Agency and the Seoul Facilities Corporation to decide how to proceed in the future. Better manage and respond to traffic conditions. Also, the drones will inspect construction sites on roads. Drone footage will determine if construction sites violate any safety regulations. It will also check if they take up too much space on the road, allowing drones to supplement the work of inspectors.
