The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website disclosed that Tesla has recalled 199,575 units of its 2023 Model S and Model Y cars. This disclosure was also confirmed by Tesla. The company stated that it has recalled about 200,000 cars in the U.S. due to a software bug that affected the rearview camera system. The recall affects certain Model S, Model X, and Model Y models equipped with the Full Self-Driving 4.0 software. The issue can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying, posing a safety risk. Tesla has already released an over-the-air software update to address the problem and will notify affected owners by mail starting March 22, 2024.

The Recall

As we all know, Tesla cars are highly technical cars that require special expertise to handle. For this reason, the regular approved mechanic shops may not be able to fix a Tesla. Besides this, Tesla loves to fix its cars thus it does not recommend taking them to a regular mechanic shop. Besides, when there is a widespread issue that requires physical attention, Tesla usually has no choice but to recall the relevant models.

In this case, certain Model S, Model X, and Model Y vehicles with the Full Self-Driving 4.0 software can not use their rearview mirror. It is quite dangerous to drive without the rearview mirror. The malfunctioning backup camera is a significant safety issue, as it hinders the driver’s ability to see obstacles while reversing. Tesla has processed 81 warranty claims potentially related to the issue.

This is the 15th recall for Tesla in the past year. In December, the company recalled over 2 million vehicles for issues related to its Autopilot driver-assist feature. Additionally, Tesla has warned of slower sales and increased competition from China. The company’s overall market valuation has also fallen significantly.

Final Words

Tesla’s recall of nearly 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to rearview camera image display issues highlights the company’s commitment to addressing safety concerns. The over-the-air software update and the forthcoming notifications to affected owners demonstrate Tesla’s efforts to rectify the issue and ensure the safety of its vehicles.
