MediaTek is making waves in the smartphone world with its latest chipset, the Dimensity 9400. Built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, this chip promises significant improvements in efficiency, power, and performance. One of the standout features of the Dimensity 9400 is its enhanced focus on generative AI, a technology that’s gaining traction.
MediaTek’s strategy of using an “all big core” architecture has proven successful in the past. Last year’s Dimensity 9300 featured four “ultra-large” cores and four big cores. That is, the chipset didn’t have the smaller cores found in SoCs. This approach resulted in impressive performance, and MediaTek is eager to build upon that success with the new chipset.
Core Architecture
The Dimensity 9400 boasts a powerful core architecture consisting of:
-
1 Cortex-X925
-
3 Cortex-X4 cores
-
4 Cortex-A720 cores
This all-Cortex setup is packed into a 3nm process. It is a significant upgrade from the 4nm process used in the Dimensity 9300. The high-performance X925 core occupies a space like the three X4 cores. MediaTek arranged the A720 cores alongside them.
MediaTek has achieved a remarkable 40% increase in power efficiency with the new chip. This large performance improvement is possible by combining the more powerful core architecture and the advanced 3nm process.
Moreover, the Dimensity 9400 delivers a 35% faster single-thread performance. The chip also sees a 28% faster multi-thread performance. The inclusion of LPDDR5X memory, which supports speeds of up to 10.7GB/s, further enhances performance.
The GPU and NPU of Dimensity 9400
The Dimensity 9400 features the Immortalis-G925 GPU. It also has MediaTek’s 8th-generation NPU. The GPU offers a large boost in performance. The company says that it offers a 41% increase in peak performance and a 40% improvement in raytracing capabilities. Also, the GPU is more energy-efficient. That should result in significant power savings. These enhancements are promising, but real-world gaming tests are not here yet. So, you should take these numbers with a pinch of salt.
The 8th-gen NPU is another highlight of the Dimensity 9400. MediaTek has set high expectations for the NPU’s ability to handle advanced AI processing.
MediaTek has announced that this chipset will support Google’s Gemini Nano. This is a significant step towards enabling powerful AI generation on Android devices. There’s also potential for expanded support for other Dimensity 9000-series chipsets. But the Dimensity 9400 is likely to be the most capable in this regard.
