Qualcomm To Release A New Chip For Smartwatches On September 10

Today, Qualcomm sent out an invite announcing that it will hold a press conference in San Francisco on September 10th. The press conference has the theme “It’s Time”. This theme implies that the event is related to “time/watch”. It is widely believed that Qualcomm will take this opportunity to update its smartwatch-specific chip (or will be named Snapdragon Wear 3100), as most smartwatches are still using Snapdragon Wear 2100/Wear 2500.

Wear 2100/2500 uses a 4-core Cortex A7 architecture clocking 1.2GHz with integrated Adreno 304 GPU and X5 LTE baseband (downstream 1Gbps). It supports a screen resolution of up to 640×480 (60FPS), also supports NFC, GPS and so on. This new smartwatch chip is expected to update the architecture and process to provide better endurance performance. In addition, considering the rumors of Pixel Watch, the new Wear chip is also expected to support the Android 9 Pie system.
