Google will enable two-step verification for 150 million accounts by the end of 2021

Google account

A recent report from Google claims that the company would automatically enable two-factor authentication (2SV) for configured accounts. This week, the technology giant gave a clearer explanation on this point. Google reveals that by the end of 2021, 150 million users will be automatically registered for 2SV. Google still firmly believes that 2SV is one of the most reliable ways to eliminate illegal access to accounts and networks. In addition, by the end of this year, 2 million YouTube creators will compulsorily have to use 2SV. The Google Android app menu will also get a new section for access to all saved passwords.

Google revealed through a blog post that it plans to force more users to use 2SV before the end of the year. This basically means that the account holder must pass additional verification steps, including phone calls, emails, or security keys. Google said it has cooperated with various organizations to provide more than 10,000 security keys for most high-risk users by the end of the year. The company also claims that in addition to 2SV, it is studying more methods so that users can obtain a secure authentication experience and reduce reliance on passwords.

Google will ban “denial of global warming” ads

Google will ban advertisements that violate the scientific consensus on climate change and fund such media from next month. The new ban applies to online advertising through Google, as well as websites and YouTube videos that display Google ads. A blog post from Google stated that the prohibited content includes any conspiracy theories. These are theories that deny humanity’s contribution to global warming. Also, theories that view the global response to “climate change efforts as a hoax or sham” will also be prohibited.

Google has long been criticized for allowing companies that deny climate change efforts to buy its search ads. According to a study conducted by a non-profit organization, Avaaz, in 2020, on the Youtube platform, more than 21 million views on wrong videos about climate change efforts have been clicked. This shows that Google’s platforms carry wrong information which can mislead the public. This study triggered a rebuke of the internet giant in the US Congress, but Google has been boasting that it is supporting efforts to combat climate change.

According to the internet giant, it will begin to enforce this new rule from November this year. The company also claims that it is in talks with experts from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Its discussion with the professional team will control the formulating of this new advertising rule.
