Samsung releases 6G spectrum white paper


Samsung Electronics Co. released a white paper setting out the company’s vision to defend the global frequency band for 6G (next-generation communication technology). The white paper, titled “6G Spectrum Extending the Boundaries,” discusses ways to obtain the spectrum needed to realize the 6G vision set out in the company’s white paper published earlier in July 2020.

Choi Sung-hyun, executive vice president and head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research said on May 8, “We have long started our journey to understand, develop and standardize 6G communications technology, and we are committed to taking a leadership role and sharing our Research results and spread our vision to bring the next hyperconnected experience to every corner of life.”

6G will require a spectrum with ultra-wideband contiguous bandwidths. It will range from hundreds of MHz to tens of GHz. This is what the industry needs to enable new services such as high-fidelity mobile holograms and truly immersive reality (XR). The major characteristics of these services are ultra-high-speed communications and massive amounts of data. The need for greater coverage is also increasing. To address these requirements, Samsung recommends considering all available frequency bands for 6G. This includes low frequencies below 1GHz to mid frequencies in the 1-24GHz range. The industry will also explore high frequencies in the 24-300GHz range.

6G era is coming

The 6G era will connect as many as 500 billion devices. It will also connect cars, electronics and even buildings around us to this ultra-high-speed communication network.

Samsung Research defines the biggest changes in three dimensions:

  1. Services such as truly immersive reality (XR), high-fidelity mobile holograms, and digital reproduction will become possible.
  2. Due to the implementation of artificial intelligence technology, the performance of telecommunication networks will significantly improve.
  3. The connection experience for users will be available anytime anywhere. From the North Pole to the South Pole, from the ground to the sky, there will be no “blind zone”.

Samsung plans to present some of the 6G candidates it has been developing over the past three years. The company will do this at its inaugural Samsung 6G Forum (samsung6gforum.com) scheduled for May 13. The company will also present its vision for future technological developments.

While 6G discussions and development is on, it is important to note that 6G network is not coming anytime soon. The earliest that 6G can enter the commercial stage is 2028. In fact, most of the report so far claims that 6G will be commercial in 2030.
