In the manufacturing of chips, interlayers bridge various components of a chip. They are particularly critical in 2.5D packaging. This process integrates high-bandwidth memory (HBM) with graphics processors (GPUs). Up to now, silicon has been the material utilized for these interlayers.

But silicon is a problem. It is expensive and not too versatile in production. That’s why Samsung is looking into using glass instead. Glass has many benefits. It can support very thin, intricate circuits. It’s more stable and cheaper to produce than silicon.

These are exactly the requirements for next-generation chips. These chips tend to be much used in data centers and in AI tasks requiring much computing power. Glass also tolerates heat better and expands less when it’s hot. This keeps the performance and reliability intact.

While the majority of businesses are slicing into huge sheets of glass (nearly 510×515 mm), Samsung is following a different trajectory. It is slicing into small glass units, which individually amount to less than 100×100 mm. That smaller size can be more adaptable and lead to better manufacturing results.

This move to glass could be the initial giant step in chip making. As AI grows, the need for better, speedier chips increases. Glass interlayers could possibly meet this need without breaking the bank.

Samsung’s new approach means it is pointing towards the future. If all goes well, it could deliver us with faster, cheaper, and more efficient chips for various industries. It will not happen overnight, but in 2028, we will already have a new standard in chip design.
