Honor Magic 9 Pro Max Camera Samples Show Some Crazy Zoom

Honor is getting serious about smartphone cameras with the Magic 9 Pro Max. The company has now shared the first official camera samples from its new flagship, showing what its 200MP periscope camera can do on its own and with a new telephoto converter.

And we're not talking about a small zoom boost. Honor has shown photos taken at 85mm, 500mm and even 1000mm.

The Magic 9 Pro Max will use a 200MP main camera and a 200MP periscope telephoto camera. Honor worked with ARRI on the camera system, with a clear focus on both photos and video.

Both sensors are large and use wide apertures to capture more light. That should help the phone keep more detail when shooting at night or in other difficult conditions.

The first samples focus mostly on the telephoto camera. The 85mm shot comes straight from the phone's periscope camera, without an external lens. Detail looks very good, but things get much more interesting when Honor adds its new camera accessories.

Honor has made two telephoto converters for the Magic 9 Pro Max.

The larger G500 converter offers 5.88x optical extension, allowing the phone to reach much longer focal lengths. Honor used it to capture the 1000mm sample.

There's also a smaller G200 converter with a 2.35x boost. Honor says it is 55 percent lighter than its older design and small enough to fit inside a lipstick-sized body.

The 500mm sample was taken with one of these external converters, while the 85mm image shows what the phone can do with its normal periscope camera.

I really like this idea. Digital zoom has improved a lot, but there is still no replacement for real optics when you want to shoot something far away. A removable lens won't be something everyone carries around, but for concerts, travel or wildlife photography, I can see it being genuinely useful.

Shooting at 500mm or 1000mm creates another problem. Even a tiny movement of your hand can completely ruin the photo.

Honor is trying to fix that with a new stabilization system. The main camera has 3-degree mechanical gimbal stabilization with a CIPA 8.0 rating, while the telephoto camera reaches CIPA 7.5.

The company calls its system TrueShift. Instead of only using motion sensors to work out how the phone is moving, it can also track the full image and use AI to predict movement. Honor says the system makes these checks up to 1,000 times every second.

That sounds impressive on paper, but this is one feature I really want to test myself. Keeping a 1000mm smartphone shot steady while holding the phone in your hands is very different from taking a normal 1x photo.

Honor's work with ARRI goes beyond color filters. The Magic 9 Pro Max supports ARRI LogC3 and 10-bit 4:2:2 APV video recording.

LogC3 gives users a much flatter image that keeps more data in highlights and shadows. It won't look as good straight from the camera, but it gives video editors much more room to work with color later.

This is the kind of camera partnership I want to see on smartphones. Putting a famous camera brand on the back doesn't mean much if all we get are a few filters. Adding real video tools and working on the image pipeline is far more useful.

The Magic 9 Pro Max certainly has the hardware to back it up too.

We've seen plenty of phones with 200MP cameras, but the Magic 9 Pro Max is taking a different approach. Honor isn't using the big number only for the main camera. It's putting another 200MP sensor behind the periscope lens and then giving users real optical converters to push the zoom even further.

The first samples look promising, although I'll wait for real-world tests before making any big claims about image quality. Official camera samples are always taken under the best possible conditions.

Still, an 85mm periscope camera that can turn into a 500mm or 1000mm shooting setup is something we don't see every day.

Honor will officially launch the Magic 9 series in China on September 28. If the rest of the camera system is as interesting as these first samples, the Magic 9 Pro Max could easily become one of the most interesting camera phones of 2026.
